How do you know its the right number?

after a lot of tracking do through the dvla managed to find the last owner the car was wrote off and listed as a cat d and passed on to a salvage company !
but at the time the car went to the bodyshop to be put through the claim the plaque was still on the car but when it come out of the salvage company it went missing along with the service book.
but the last owner before me confirmed the miles 40k and the plaque number
