car broke down

right i was driving to my house today, turned the car and lost drive, when it goes into gear and i try to drive, they is a knocking/grinding sound and it won't move, the gears all select fine. any ideas? is it the circlip? i was only driving at around 5/10 mph. cheers

does the speedo still go up if you put it in gear and rev it? if so circlip gone
