Thread: 1st oil guage

    1st oil guage

My 1st oil guage which I think is supposed to show oil level shows the correct level when I turn my key to the 1st position but drops to zero when the engine is running.

Is this normal or have I got a dodgy guage?

Normal. When an engine runs the oil goes all over the place inside and a gauge measuring the amount would be all over the place

And the other 2 should be on min when the key is half turned then rise when the engine is started?

What's the highest the temp and pressure should be?

yes, and oil temp needle should be around 80-90 this is affected by outside temp/how hard ur driving so u have to bear this in mind as may go higher, re pressure again can vary greatly but from cold mine is around 5-6bar when hot about 3bar

Thanks. How hot should the oil be driving?

Sorry, meant to say how hot should it be before driving the car really hard. You say 80-90 is normal but should it be built up to even higher than this before flooring it?

80degrees is optimal for most standard oils. What all the oil cooler themostats are set to.

i've had mine up to about 120 on the motorway or whilst thrashing the car. thats on standard oil cooling setup. my other clio has a mocal remote oil cooler on it, and that sits at 100 when thrashing it, as the turbo adds a lot of heat to the circuit

pressures should be around 1bar warm idle, 3 bar at 4k rpm warm and 5 bar cold idle, above that cold driving. but dont always rely on the gauge, mate dan just checked his with a proper mechanical gauge and that showed 1 bar warm idle when internal renault dial shows 0 bar, so accurate they are not (dan has new sender unit and new clocks on his aswell)
