    Play in Steering Wheel !!! Causes ???

    Hi All ,I have a Willy 1 and the Steering Wheel has about 1" - 2" of movement before it moves the Wheels ,can anybody advise me as to where to look first ,and will this be EXPENSIVE ??? ,thanks in advance Mark

    not usually a serious problem!

    The steering column has a rubber bushed joint in it near the rack which wears out causing excessive play. The most common solution is to get it welded up by a competent mechanic.

    Shouldn't cost more than 20quid and will give you rock solid handling.

    simple to diagnose if its the universal joint as vkosho mentions. in footwell on drivers side locate the big rubber boot over the steering column where it goes through bulkhead. unclip it and slide up the steering column, underneath should find the joint. with wheels on the deck move the steering wheel and if the column below the joint doesnt move instantly, then theres ur issue

    other faults i have seen are track rod ends, track rods themselves and the rubber bushes that hold the rack to the subframe

    Yeah, mine had the same problem, untill last week, had it welded for £30 i think, all is good now, feels so much better.

    If your in the north west area i can give u the places number.

    Hi Danny and everyone else that has responded to my question ,I have found the Problem and Yes it was the Knuckle Joint at the end of the Colomn and I have a Mate who is going to weld it on Friday Morning for the Grand sum of £15 so all should be good ,thanks for all your Help Mark
