    tell me about wheel bolts

    whats he reason for some wheel bolt manufacturers to make the tapered
    end of the bolts as a seperate section ,bit like a washer if i may .
    here are pics to show what the funk i am on about .
    STANDARD RENAULT BOLT

    SEPERATE TAPER BIT

    i got 2 theories on this one ;
    1- seperate taper bit is made to prevent wheel bolt coming loose somehow .
    2- simply for ease of mass production , i.e : they make 1 type bolt body
    and stick tapered ,radius,flat ends to them .

    DISCUSS YALL :P

    Standard renault wheel bolts used to have the seperate taper bit but they changed it to the all in 1....that's what the bloke at renault told me anyway after I shown him the 1 I'd snapped

    I don't know if it's relevent but I've noticed that the old ones seem to be made of cheese & 1 always snaps when I torque it back up after having it off

    So that when the muppets in the tyre centres spin the nuts on, the friction and wear is on the steel washer and not the alloy wheel. That's my theory anyway.

    It acts like a standard washer, but locates better in the wheel, enuring the wheel is central on the hub.s

    Thats my guess, and im sticking to it.

    It got so bad for me with those breakaway washer bolts, I developed a phobia when sending in for tyre balance/rotation. I would repeat like crazy to every worker in the workshop" No air gun! Torque wrench only!". Then walk away - until I hear the inevitable "Holy shit!" coming from near my car.

    That's also when I got very used to driving to Renault spare parts with 3 bolts in a wheel.
