How to check piston rings

I might buy another bottom end today. I'd like to know if there's a way to check in what condition rings are? It's just BE without head, so I cannot do leak down test. Any ideas?

measure the ring gap.. i think you can find it in haynes..

quick check pop the pistons half way down the bores and pop some diesel in...

if it doesn't race though then there ok..

or remove the rings from the pistons and measure the gaps..

better way is to try a new ring in the bore to measure bore ware..
