why do people recommend 172 front springs?

what is the ride height, is it lower?

172, Williams and Valvers all share the same springs. They are pretty easy to get hold of as many 172 owners choose to 'upgrade'.
Denoted by 2 White Dots on the springs.

172 CUP Springs are slightly stiffer and a few mm lower than the above.
Denoted by one Yellow and one White dot on the spring (as opposed to 2 white dots).

I don't think valvers have the same springs as willy. Valvers have only one dot and it's in many different colours. Williams has as said 2 white ones.

My shocks and springs from old valver as pictured:
From all the OEM valver springs I have seen they are the same as Williams.
Never heard anyone contradict either. Maybe the ones you have seen are not OEM?

Maybe they are the same in England. Not in Europe though. At least here you can get 5+ (I've heard there are around 10 different springs) different colours for valver depending how hard do you want your car to be. But since I don't own a valver I didn't go to the details of the colour code. Maybe someone else from Europe can confirm this. But it's true that from all the valvers I've seen all of them had only one dot and it wasn't white.

Maybe I've confused this with the dot on the shocks. Those are definetly different. It's late here (1 AM). Will check this next time I'm in the garage.
