does anyone know what could cause this? when you turn the engine off the fan stays on and wont go off you have to switch the ignition back on them off again

If the water temperature is past halfway when you switch off the engine, the electric water pump will keep the fan activated with the ignition key out. It should do that for about 8 mins.

Yeah, sounds like your normal fan isn't coming on and when you turn the engine off it's activating the anti-perc system.
The fan obviously works so check the switch on the side of the rad and the wires going to it, these tend to corrode.
