How were williams one's numbered ?

Just been asked by a mate how the williams 1's were numbered....At fcs we had a good selction of low numbered williams 1's.

Carlos and 2lives were numbered next to each other 0158 & 0159 !

But how were they badged up ???

Were they done at the production line ??? or at the export centre ??? And i mean all the williams ones....including the numbers exported world wide.

Answers on a post card please.

Id say renault marketing told the factory what numbers were lhd and what were rhd on a list and some guy on the production line just randomly picked a plaque out from a 'lhd' pot or a 'rhd' pot and nailed them on. Roughly the lowest numbers first but not necessarily.

However, the first couple (maybe ten or so) were probably done in some rough order as they would have been needed for shows / ceremonies etc and so deliver would have to be on time.

As with all Renault cars, the press cars probably had 'renaulsport selected parts' added at some point to ensure good reviews

I would say on the production line as they would know the destination of each car before they even started building it.

It wasn't just randomly picked out of a pot as the fabrication numbers would prove, Can Carlos and 2Live please let me know their Fabrication number?

My car is number 289, i have a picture of it parked next to 288. Met by chance in the street in Guildford. Mine was registered in Scotland and 288 has an english number plate. Not sure if/how that might help.

Speaking of which, mine is quite an early Williams 2.. judging by the fabrication number.
