    why does everyone hate ABS?

a while ago my temp display stopped lighting up, so i replaced the bulb, whilst i was there i saw there was no bulb for the abs. i plugged one in and sure enough it just stayed lit.. but only for 2-3 days. has been perfect ever since...

now I did a test the other day and just slamming the brakes on stops me from 70mph in about 25m. Now to me this is excellent and i couldn't see myself stopping quicker if i tried (without abs) and i can obviously control the car better with it too

so why do I always hear people slating the mk1 abs system? I've never had it cut in unexpectedly either.

Running standard (afaik) brakes and Eagle F1 tyres

In my case, I only hate ABS when the other car I own does not have one. My brain don't work fast enough in sudden emergency braking to remember whether to slam on the brakes (abs) or to pump the brakes (non-abs). Other than that, I reckon abs has saved me twice (in a scooby) in situations where I would not have time to react and pump in a non-abs car.

ABS is what killed my 172.

I would have stopped intime if the abs hadnt kicked in.

ABS is fine in that rarest of situations where you need to swerve to avoid something when you can't stop in time. It doesn't help you stop sooner. In fact it actually prolongs braking distances in most cases.

It also doesn't help on track and I was lucky I happened to be pointing at a gap in the hay bales at Cadwell when mine cut in and I sailed off teh track.

good abs can half your braking distances avoid lock ups and means you can avoid things while braking. the clio abs system is pants

Since when does it halve braking distances? I suppose the very latest expensive systems might be able to but I doubt it.
