    electric water pumps

Just seen these whilst browsing the think auto web site...

    http://www.thinkauto.com/waterpumps.htm

Seems like a good idea, but with a average motor life of only 2000 hours, assuming 1hour usage every day, thats about a 5 year life span, wouldn't want it failing on me whilst out driving.

Has anyone ever fitted an electric water pump and done away with the standard mechanical impeller?

If so, notice any gains? Would assume its similar to doing away with the PAS pump?

I've thought of this before to get some free hp

http://www.projecttransam.com/projects9.asp claims a 3% increase on power and its not an advert as I can see.

People change the water pumps though when they chnage the belt at 4 year so IMO its no huge issue.

I've used em they're a good idea if space is tight. I used one when I fitted a Rover V8 in a 1930s Morris as the waterpumps on those are really long.

You need an ajustable switch for them so you can ajust the flow rate, because as standard they flow to much, meaning the water passes through the radiator too quickly which stops the heat radiating away.

How do you work out the correct flow etc? Can you have it adjustable depending on revs/speed etc?

The version I used had a controller which you set to optimum running temperature. It then ajusted the flow to allow the temperature to be at this level constantly.
