what's the difference between the bottom ends? Am I right in thinking that it's just that the F7R has a longer stroke or has it got a slightly bigger bore?

Stroke is longer and bore is 0.7mm bigger.

I was under the understanding that the F7R had valve guides and the F7P didnt, not that the valves were bigger

valves are bigger on willy , head differs slightly both engines have V.guides

16V doesn't have valve guides good one, lol

Bottom end has different stroke, bore and block casting.

To make the 2l rods clear the block on a 1.8 you need to grind the block and depending on the casting sometimes make a big hole sothe crank can turn in the block.

Thats why the williy stater is the same size as the 1.2/1.4 starters as the fat 1.8 doesn't easily clerr the ribs.
