one just slid off, but i cant work out how you get them off without damdging the clips?

They just slide off they're usually a bit tight tho so clips will be damaged.

they just fall of when you steam clean it exposing more rust or is that just mine

do you mean the sidestrips? the rear quarter ones just slide off. The ones on the doors have are held by one screw and then it unclips off.
