    Toys for Jesus...

well, I decided to upgrade my TV instead of spend it on things like a remap and coilovers or brakes for the Willy... the result is a 40" Samsung LCD and it's fookin awesome, I'd recommend that everyone goes to HD LCD as the difference is simply amazing... Xbox 360 people will notice it more, as TV's tend to blur text and colours over each other, but you dont get any of that, it's as clear as a CRT high res monitor and great for PC and console gaming! Only regret I really have is all the money sank into the Willy when I could have been buying gadgets and toys!

rt_blackpool: got it for £1192 from Sound & Vision in Bolton, but I got extra discount coming to me as I found the site through Quidco, so they owe me 3% of the sale or something. You can get the 32" Samsung (same exact model) from Freemans.com for £680 delivered, as they have a 20% off first purchase thing going on at the moment for those looking to upgrade.

Hooligan, it will be HD almost certainly at that size, they are even bringing out CRT HD TV's next month, Samsung are doing a slim fit one that's only 16 inches front to back... 32" at only £350... bargain imo.
Still running the Willy aye... still looking for an M3 GT, but no joy as yet... I'll finally be able to take the Willy off the road and have it as my track toy... cant wait tbh, looking forward to a change, had it 2.5 years now...

    BE CAREFUL...

There is HD and then there is HD!

Most flat panels (LCD or PLASMA) that claim to be HD are only 1366x768 resolution. OK, pretty good, but not anywhere near as good as the TRUE HD, which is 1920x1080.

The XBox, PS3 and all of the Blue-Ray DVD players etc.. will all be in 1920x1080p so for the best picture quality and pixel for pixel mapping get a 1080 TV.

not quite right that mate. most HD's are 720p, with only a handful being 1080p. Xbox 360 doesn't support 1080p either, it will do 1080, but not progressive. I looked into this before I bought one, but tbh only the PS3 will be 1080p (apparently, if it ever comes out) and TV wont be using it until 2010-2012, so I dont mind waiting to be honest. I'll be about ready for a new TV by then anyway lol.

Another thing to bear in mind is that you cant actually physically see any difference between 720p and 1080p on anything less than a 50" TV... which I dont have anyway... would be nice though!

    Most HD's are 720 exactly.

But what you should be waiting for is a decent priced 1080 model...granted the formats to support this at the minute are only interlaced, so fast motion is a bit of a problem, and would look better in the 720p format.

However with the higher bandwidth dvd's and the better video scalers that can actually covert 1080i to 1080p then I personally think 720 is a waste of time.

Also, yes you can spot the difference in picture quality...from any distance. You just need to know what to look out for.

i agree with Jesus the standard for HD ready only requires 1366x768 which is what most of my companies 32" screens are. There is no point in increasing that on anything other than 42"+. In either case both are HD.

Plus iirc sky HD broadcast in 720p so whats the point in buying a native 1080 res tv now when it will be using scaling to correct the size and end up in a slightly worse picture in most cases.

Sky will be broadcasting in both 720 and 1080 (but picture quality will depend on a host of other factors not including the actual display device)

I spend my days designing hi-end display systems and just thought I would advise people against splashing cash on, what is in my view, a second rate format, or at least will be very shortly.

Go and see for yourself, and read technology reports on all the latest gear...I am guessing that with most companies bringing out 1080 res panels and projectors, that they see this as the way forward.

Added to that, the new defacto for cinema is 1080 too (but in JPEG2K format)....and all hi end displays are rendered and projected at 1920x1080...or maybe 2048x1080 (if you are really flash)
