Oil questions

After a couple of questions answered;

1. What oil to use in willy?

2. Do you notice a difference with fresh oil on the oil pressure gauge?

I change the oil depending on the time of year usually. In winter thinner, summer thicker, however I only use fully synth.

At the moment I'm using 5w 40 shell oil and tbh I'd highly recommend it, low sturdy temps when thrashing and good pressure always.

Pressure will change depending on grade and quality of oil used, so dont worry too much. As a rule of thumb mines around 3-4 bar on a cold engine (depends on weather that day I guess) and if i drive a bit spirited it will hit 6 bars. Once warm it idles at just over zero and rises to about 5 max under full load.

2. No, but the oil temp drops about 20c for the first few drives!

I'm due an oil change soon - dunno what to do as to oil choice..

Silkolene ProS 5w40 gets some good reviews from people.

Halfords own brand 5W-40, does the job perfectly fine and is currently on offer in my local place.

£20 for 5 litres.

we just serviced mine with 10W 40 Valvoline turbo, was a bit weiry about using 5 being too thin for a 100k engine.

The W number is more related to cold starting viscosity and the second number is general operating viscosity. I believe it is a good thing to have the W number lower for colder climates.

It seems the F7 engine, as with most newer engines, don't quite really need to go thicker as they get older. I have tried -60 racing grade and can't really tell much difference. I think some brave souls here have also tried -30 viscosity without much harm.

Id also recommend a Purolator oil filter, my oil is staying cleaner using this and with the OE filter, you can buy one from www.opieoils.co.uk
