sorry to keep asking questions.....but.....

whenever i move the gear stick it makes a shocking noise, kind of sounds like metal rubbing metal. it mainly does it when i move the stick to the left, as though going for 1st or second and does it more if i was to go for reverse.

im pretty sure its not a gear box problem as it does it in neutral (moving the stick left and right without gear changes), and when im doing it from inside the car it sounds to be coming from directly beneath the gear stick its self.

could it be the thing that connects the gear stick to the box? (linkage is it?)
