Nah not really, just get the tensioner right with the engine out the bay then use the alternator to slacken the belt and re-tension when needed. I never touch my tensioner

The jerking issue with the car is most likely the lambda sensor and/or the wiring leading to it from the ECU.

I've just gone through the same process on my GTT, so far I have;

- Replaced the 'ball' at the base of the gearstick including the rubber bush
- Replaced the return spring...

I've never rebuilt one but I have heard of this problem before - I think you need to spunk quite a lot of silicone around the seal.

Have a look at winner racing on eBay - they make stainless rads for the 5 turbo and 16v in various thicknesses, they may be able to make you a custom rad

Sounds like the classic lambda sensor fault if it's 'chugging' on idle and stalling, it'll feel like something is holding you back when it's cold as well and suddenly it will burst into life, then...
