I've been travelling all the way to my work in Reading from London just to keep my job over the easter hols. Anyway if i boot it down there my petrol costs nearly equals my earnings, which sucks...

SO i've found myself reaching new levels of pikeyness on the motorways and just wondering if anyone else has tried this..

boot it untill about 85-90 then just dip the clutch and roll untill you hit about 65, do this again and again and i swear you only use about 1/4 the amount of the petrol!!

and after i got of the m4 i was just even worse, 5th gear lover! i was getting overtaken by grannys and everything. it was quite surreal, and calming!:)

Anyway i managed to get home on about 3 squid i swear! when it usually costs about a tenner.

dunno if i'll do it again i just wish the valver had 6 gears or at least a better ratio'd 5th gear. 4500 rmp at 85 is gay.

sorry for the waffle but has anyone else been this skanky  ?

Aye its true, an engine is most efficient when it is turning slowly but burning fuel hard.

I.e flooring it low in the rev range. I think its how world record people in their ecenomical cars do it, turn their engine on, floor it to the desired speed and then switch off again. Aparently it saves much more petrol than doing your normal feathering of the accelerator.

So what's the MPG before and after?
I think 30mpg should be about normal for 1.8L/2L clios.

When my g'box dies I'm going to investigate getting a long 5th put in. I really don't see the point in having a short 5th when 4th hits 120.

i dont see the point.

if your driving a 1.8 or 2.0L 16v clio you are doing it for performance.

if your worried about petrol costs go and sell it and buy a ghey diesel!

I wish I got those engine speeds in my rallye at those speeds. Heres my engine speeds and road speeds in gears:-

4th Gear, 2250-2500rpm, 30mph
5th Gear, 2000rpm, about 30mph
5th Gear, 4000rpm, 62mph -ish
5th Gear, 4500rpm, 70mph

Good old S1 rallye gearbox :D But you cannae beat the acceleration and there is a gear for every corner. Stops you driving over the speed limit too as the engine is reving really high.
