driving on motorway battey light suddenly came on!

assumed it was alternator belt snapped cause its been squeeling like a bitch recently between 1-3k revs

anyway continued the 80 mile trip home and got there ok

parked up... turned car off.
started up first time. checked belt still attached and spinning around?????

turned steering when stationory and belt made the horrible noise
so the belts still on?? as is the battery lifght???

belt does feel quite loose tho so maybe its just not turning the alternator wheel????

what drives the belt anyway?

any ideas on sorcing the problem

it obviously alternator something and not battery as the battery light is on constantly...

Probably just needs a new alternator then mate. Check the wires that connect to it also.

Alternator is about £90 iirc

battery failed me completly on way home from work today

lights started to dim so i turned them off followed by abs light coming on!
then lack of power.

£90 for an alternator :O

Make sure teh alternator is actually ****ed before buying a new one.

Tighten belt up, it runs off the crankshaft, so if it was squeeling the crank might just be slipping round, is the stearing massivly heavy, runnign hotter than usual?

If you think the aux belt has snapped NEVER carry on driving, teh aux belt drives the water pump, and wihtout that teh car will very quickley overheat and **** the engine/headgasket.

If ity is the alternatopr that is ****ed i'd go for a 2nd hand one personally
