Hi all, just been and had a look at a williams 1 as Im looking to purchase one in the next week or two.

The question I have is when viewing a williams in the flesh how can I be sure that it is actually a genuine williams and not just a 1.8 16v that has been made to look like a williams.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

p.s If anyone can help my ideal car wil be in great condition including body work and wheels, looking for a clio 3 but open to a 1 or 2. As standered as poss etc....Have a few grand to spend. I live near Gatwick area.

Cheers all

Jamie

a williams 1 will be an L reg and have a numbered plaque on the dash, check the logbook for the engine cc etc and it as far as i know it would say williams on that aswell if it was a real one :)
you'll also notice through the gears that a valver feels less torquey than a williams does until 4000rpm. also on test drive take it to the rev limiter, a williams will hit the limiter around 6500rpm whereas a valver will keep goin until around 7000rpm.

Check for the oval plate number.
Williams code is C57M
Valver code is C57D

Same goes for the number on top of the the drivers's arch.

Valvers have a different manifold. The williams is tubular where the valvers is more square type sections of manifold.

Oil dipstick on a williams has a white dot on it, the one on a valver has a dark blue or black dot on it.

Take the airbox off and look down for the engine plate. You'll be able to feel 'f7r' in raised text if not actually see it. F7R is also cast onto the block in 2 places, front and rear (well on megane f7rs anyway)...

Sadly, you can write to the DVLA and get them to change it to whatever you want I believe. :? I think a bloke off Passionford had a V5 with 'Sierra Sapphire Cosworth' on it but he did some research and it came back that it was never a Cossie - it was a sapphy shell and someone had somehow got DVLA to change it on the log book...
