View Full Version : Reverse gear crunching in Clio Valver

For some reason my gearbox has started making a bad crunching noise when i put it in reverse nearly every time. The clutch is all the way down, the revs are steady and im pulling the lever on the gear stick all the way up, but it still crunches. Also it seems increasingly difficult to find first gear sometimes, it just really doesnt want to go into it.....

It was fine when i bought it but its just started doing it mainly today on th way back from LTR (typical, could have got it looked at if it did it before lol)

Im just hoping its something that needs adjusting and isnt gona cost a fortune.... just wondered if anyone has had any experience of this?

Cheers

Sam

Mine plays up sometimes - try putting it into 2nd then putting it into the gear you want.

try changing the gearbox oil for some decent stuff.

when the gearbox oil gets oil it breaks down (like engine oil does) and stops working properly. also with leaks etc, it mite not be totally full!

worth doing first before contemplating new box/clutch!

Mine crunches if i push it in quickly, if i ease it in its fine, its not hard to get it reverse either.

check the engine mounts under the battery tray if this goes or is loose the gearbox moves and the linkage does not work as well

Have you tried double clutching it? can help sometimes.
Have you made sure your not moving, before putting it into reverse as that can sometimes make it crunch.

i put it in 1st first, then go for reverse, do it out of habit now, stops it crunchin

I had an RSi, that did the same. My Valver now also does the same.
Just ease it in slowly and it should be fine.

Right, basically ive tried all of the above and it doesnt have any effect. Ive noticed that when i first start the car up its fine for a while, but then it just seems to be really difficult to put into first and second gear, and impossible to put in reverse without a nasty crunching.

However when the car is turned off it will go in any gear without a problem as easy as pie, then as soon as you turn it on its difficult again.

someone mentioned it could be the linkages, is this a difficult job?

cheers

Gearbox oil level will cause reverse to crucnch if its not totally full

Could be the linkages but also could be a bent selector fork in the box if you give it a hard time.

My car only had oil change and new oil filter few weeks back and the oil is dropping :( Water barely goes down though...

My 3rd gear crunches if i do it fast, put it in with ease and it doesnt crunch at all...

I dont understand why you need new clutches when its a gearbox problem?

If the gears crunch then its a gearbox problem not a clutch one, surely?

Im not sure, sometimes i think mine depends on my clutch, its hard to explain, if my foot isnt right down it wont go in, whereas other gears will go in without it being pushed to the floor...

hmm if you put it in first before you select reverse it won't crunch.

Mine does this, a lot of them do, not clutch thou, well not on mine, as it's been replaced.

My valver used to crunch between 1st and 2nd, that was the clutch thou.

exactly the same problem i had. After i changed the clutch cable the first time. Now there is a new clutch in, also he's changed the fork because it wa bent. -Can't get it into gear at the moment.

No if the clutch is going and not disengaging properly the box gears will still be spinning when tryign put it on, and hence it crunches

Surely a broken clutch would mean its slips and not the fact it cant engage? :?

depends if its the clutch or the springy plate thingy (forget the name) thats bust, or release bearing thats buggered
