If you want a cheap run around don't buy a Renault dude.

AX is where it's at.

Your asking for trouble - at that money jap is the obvious choice for reliability and trim spec

J o n
07-03-2006, 15:29
dont buy anything French for a run about... like Matt says, go Jap (or old German when they were actually a quality car...)

Swervin_Mervin
07-03-2006, 15:33
Nothing wrong with french you big girl. As long as you pick the right one.

J o n
07-03-2006, 15:36
lot wrong with French... ****ing shite, most unreliable cars out there, never had any trouble with my Fords... which says it all really!

Swervin_Mervin
07-03-2006, 15:57
Dude, you've owned 1 french car yes? I've owned 5 and Steph now has one.

Most have been faultless. Only 1 was a 'mare. As for Fords....

J o n
07-03-2006, 16:13
yeah only owned one... although technically I've owned 4 Williams... well, I have paid for 4 with the money I have wasted on it... maybe slightly more than the average owner, but a lot or most people seem to spend money on repairs each month... not what you need for a runabout imo and the chances of a French Vs Jap car breaking are pretty easy to call... French, all the time, Jap, hardly ever.

Swervin_Mervin
07-03-2006, 16:19
These are specialist performance cars though dude. Bung a big engine in a small space and things will get expensive.

I'll readily admit though that Jap cars are better engineered. I think half the problem with ours are that they've had shite lives and now we're paying.

stew
07-03-2006, 16:20
buy decent replacement parts. uprate where possible.

cars break - end of! - i hate all this jap cars are much more reliable crap!

every car is built to a budget - so will last in accordance.

J o n
07-03-2006, 16:30
not true Stew, ever read the JD powers survey? you'll find that it's always Ford and Jap cars at the top. Why? Simple, they are built better and dont break half as much. Toyota Celica (newest shape) didn't have ANY reported breakdowns for the first 3 years of it's release... no one other than a Jap car maker has managed to do this.

Know what your saying Mike, the problem is that the only desirable French cars for me are the performance once... I guess there in lies the problem lol

Swervin_Mervin
07-03-2006, 16:37
Only Ford cars at the top are the Jags. The others do shite.

As for those results, you have to take them with a pinch of salt. Service accounts for a huge proportion. I suspect that half the reason some cars finish lower than expected is because people have higher expectations of them than they should (VAG for example). Ever noticed Skoda do far, far better than other VAG products? Must be because the customer service ranks high and they don't have as high an expectation than, say, a Golf owner.

Zollo
07-03-2006, 17:22
The JD Power survey isn't just based on reliability though is it? It's on the whole ownership experience, including the dealership and service. Obviously the French are going to fail miserably on that part!

French cars aren't bad at all as cheap runabouts - they're generally mechanically sound and very cheap and simply to fix...unless you buy the wrong one

Having said that, Japanese cars have a reputation for reliablity for a reason - because they're generally the most reliable cars.

Well ive been to look at both

The purple one was a dog - worse than yours jesus.

The red one was a minter but he wanted £750 - so walked away.

Bet he gets his mates to bid on ebay to get what price he wants lol

J o n
07-03-2006, 18:39
buy my car if you want mate, break it for parts... they will prolly work in other people's cars... lol

Andy
07-03-2006, 18:41
only got £300 - £500 max mate

think yours is worth more than that

p.s drove the skoda home today - the gasket is on its way out but its survived a few more miles :D

Get the Panache.. my first Clio was one.. awesome car.

Only had to change 1 Wheel Bearing, a starter motor and centre section when I had it - like, 4 years!

Lovely.

The Mk1 Phase3 is the most reliable Clio to be made apparently.

lmao at fords and jap crap being reliable lol.

fords are a bag of shite.....full stop.

jap crap./runs and runs yeah..but they dont get much hammer, and wen they asre given hamer.....they break as much as the next car.

german....vag.......again..........loada shite..iv had 2 n broke both of em in less than 12 months.

buy a well looked after french car, an it will look after you.

had loads now...never really bin disappointed with em tbh. which is more than can be said for various other manufacturers

Andy

my fiesta zetec s spends more time in ford than i have owned it

****ing peice of shit always braking and costing a fortune

so how does that work then jesus ...

willy never broke touch wood

J o n
08-03-2006, 09:35
I had one (the 1.6 though), never had one problem with it really. If you actually drove the Williams you'd have a load of problems too i'd bet... try and see, but you need to cover more than 20 miles in it before you can call it reliable

Rajk
08-03-2006, 19:45
buy old german, 325i tourer is the way forward, with towing hook!

I've had 2 Escorts both for 6 months as they kept breaking down

4 Clio's and not a single trip to the dealers or call the the RAC.....says it all imo

richy
08-03-2006, 23:12
it dont matter what make the car is, if its had a hard life and not been looked after its bound to break, at the end of the day we own 10year old+ cars which have proberly been hammered to death all there lifes and u expect it to be 100% reliable,

as the saying goes, shit happens!!

My vote for Northy's next japanese car: '85 Toyota Sprinter Trueno - Japan's no. 1 cult car. Perfect complement to his French cult car. Quite pricey though.

My vote is use his Williams everyday!

northy
13-03-2006, 10:04
williams is now in use everyday lads...in two weeks i now have

A speeding offence courtest of dewsbury police.
A cracked headlight protector
Ive joing the over 85,000 mile club
And a nice new chip on my bonnet

But ive had some great doo's since its been a everyday car...thanks to a Audi TT, BMW M3 (u cheated mate) er and a Seat Ibiza thingy in yellow.

J o n
13-03-2006, 10:08
welcome to my world... you'll soon be looking to get rid too

oh, dont think it would have made much difference if the M3 cheated or not, you lost before you started there mate

nah...m3s arent that mate....not that iv truly cained any like.....but they struggle round the twisties

J o n
13-03-2006, 10:12
dunt matter, they are worlds apart on the straights... and i mean worlds... I cant see a Willy beating one in any situation apart from a very twisty section with next to no straights. these things pull in 5th like yours does in 3rd, amazingly fast...

2 live
13-03-2006, 10:18
hmmmmmmmmm i remember adi beatin one on nos...an im sure u told me mehdi beat one in his t/b beast.........so they not all that fast either mate tbh.

khanys mite be...but as u say....its had a shit loada work done......and werent you level/beating mehdi in his??

beatin one in a williams..already done that on the twisties...gimme a couple months il do it on the straights too ;)

J o n
13-03-2006, 10:24
yeah Mehdi did one of the new ones over... but thats a fair bit quicker than every other Clio lol.

Khany's only has basic breathing mods, just a torst and it ripped me and Mehdi apart... It was a joke how much quicker it was... I really really cant see even your pre engine death even keeping it in sight on a straight tbh. Twisties is a different story, like round your way it would get owned, but an M3 vs a modded Willy round the roads near me and its the other way round, the M3 wins EVERY time.

2 live
13-03-2006, 10:28
yeah.....n i bet the petrol stations are callin them real winners too.....lol....

mehdis white one as u know mate.1 car length a gear it pulled from mine.....so in the state it was in..yeah id say id be able to keep one in sight on the straights..no probs.....and teach it a lesson when we got to the twisties.....and leave it for dead as it pulled in the station to refuel, an i still have 1/2 tank left......lol.......lets see it catch me up again then lol. by the time its caught me up, if it can....itl b time for it to refuel.

J o n
13-03-2006, 10:37
tbh i'd much prefer to pay for petrol instead of new engines and full brake sets every other month... I'd keep the Williams but cant afford to run it lol.

we'd be able to test it, but your car will be completely faster by then... I suppose individual filters, decat and zorst will see the 'M' power into the sunset though, they tune up quite well by all accounts... oh, and chipped rev to 8k all day long without the need for a steel bottom end...

2 live
13-03-2006, 10:41
lol..so will mine.....individual filters, its the future

Blimey. Am I the only one whos not had any problems in 2 YEARS of using my Willy as an everyday car???? No breakdowns or breakages, the only thing I've had to replace are my tyres and the battery!

(....I'm touching as much wood here as possible now!)

northy
13-03-2006, 11:02

you dont drive it enough to break down Northy...

basically dont do 12-15k a year, it will cost you that in money to run the peice of shit...

Jimbob
13-03-2006, 11:33
I did about 18k last year with no probs. Guess its down to the individual car and its history. I've got no rust either. Mind you, the car has still only done 50k miles.

Jimbob
13-03-2006, 11:37
...also its still completely standard. I wonder how much of the breakages are from modded parts (ie, modded cams, manifolds etc)? Interesting to know.

mine broke more when standard, I dont think it makes any difference... i'd trust aftermarket parts more tbh, as for a start they are newer and based on better technology imo

Mines got rust as its parked n the street, on a bus route, with gritters in operation.

Mine has been reliable, niggly problems with stalling etc, have been due to faulty gay bits rather that modded items.

Only major thing I have had done is gearbox, again this didn't break, it was whining, so I had it refurbed, before it went.

Mine gets used everyday, gonna roll over to 80k this week I imagine, bought it on 56k 2 years ago

Six cylinder M3s will do 25mpg quite happily, so there's not that much difference.

And an M3 with an equally skilled driver will quite happily keep up with a Williams through the corners I'd say. It may be a bit of a porker, but it's got wider wheels, more advanced suspension, rwd and a 50/50 weight distribution on its side. Unfortunately not many M3s are driven by people who can prove this though.

Very twisty roads though, granted, a Williams would probably have the edge.

I've my Willy :D for just over 4 years now and 123,000 miles, the car has been extremely reliable where the only work I've had done was the gearbox overhauled as a matter of concern as it was wining a bit  and the usual battery alternator problems.

As for racing on the road, don't know about BMW's but I gave a Lotus Elise a good hiding and pissed a load of bikers off on the twisties

doesn't really matter, I dont think I'll be driving it like that at all tbh... cant really be bothered with it all anymore, just want a car that looks good, doesn't break all the time and 'can' go quick when I want. When I got my Williams I only got it because I couldn't find a decent E36 328i, so I guess it was only a matter of time before they lured me back to them...

it wont be getting thrown round corners either... not getting one for that, doesn't interest me anymore, maybe the odd motorway blast for me and thats it... it's all dual carriageways and motorways to get to work anyway... most of my miles are on DC and M-ways... in fact 90% prolly...
