I get asked many questions about oil so I thought a thread here for all oil related questions would be a good idea and build into a FAQ or reference point for others.

So, put your oil questions here but please give the following information if you would like a recommendation:

Make
Model
Year
Engine size/type

Any mods

Type of use (road/track)

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used)

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc?

I hope this will help and become a useful thread

Regards
Simon

Good idea Simon, can you give me a recommendation for mine then,

Make - Renault
Model - Clio 16v
Engine - 1800/F7P
Year -1996

Mods = full exhaust inc de-cat and panel filter.

Type of use - Road, motorway, fast road and track days every now and then.

Oil temps are normally between 80-100 on normal driving, however on track they go up to 120 deg!

Can i have a recommendation and price for both engine and box?

I also want an oil which warms up quicker, I currently use 10/40 Shell oil from renault!

Have tried Total quartz 5/40 but wasn't that impressed by it!

Cheers

Danny

Hi,

For the engine we would suggest a 5w-40 full synthetic for all year round use, go for an ester based one such as Silkolene and Motul and they will be ideal for track days too.

For the gearbox a good 75w-90, full synthetic is best so again have a look at Silkolene and Motul.

Simon.

Make : Renault
Model : Clio 16v
Year : 1992
Engine size/type : 1998cc/F7R

Any mods : Supersprint manifold, devil competition exhuast, decat, hillpower stage 1 chip, itg pannel filter (soon to be cammed, headwork and proper remap!)

Type of use (road/track) : Fast road, 1/4miling, soon to be track

Additional info (max oil temps, current oil used) : 80-100deg during normal running, 100-110deg if giving it a really good hard drive! Currently using Halfords 5w50 Fully synthetic motorsport oil.

What do you want a recommendation for? Engine, Gearbox etc? :

Recommendation for both engine and gearbox. I (unfortuntally) tried some whynns engine oil flushing agent with my last oil change, last week, to try and reduce cold start noise from the tappets. if anything its made it worse. Ive also tried additives such as whynns hydraulic lifter treatment, and in the past forte top end treatment, to sort this with no real improvement!

Would like an oil that give perfect protection on cold starts. Would an 0w40 oil be a possibility?

If you are going to track the car then the following would be my recommendations:

Silkolene Pro S 5w-40
Silkolene Syn 5 75w-90

Using Halfords 5W-40 Fully Synth Oil.

Ok your spot on going for a 5w-40, however the Halfords own is not fully synthetic, but a hydrocrakced mineral oil, for a true synthetic look at Mobil, Motul, Silkolene, Amsoil and Fuchs.

For the gearbox, a GL4 75w-90.

As a top quality option you are looking at a 5w-40 full synthetic, the cost option is a 10w-40 semi synthetic.

Brand wise, for tops look at Silkolene and Motul.

What would you recommend for running in a newly rebuilt renault engine bearing in mind it has a 350bhp odd turbo coversion. also then what oil when its run in. and would the silkolene syn 5 still be the best transmission oil to use with a jb5 gearbox with a gripper limited slip diff in it. cheers maxiboy

I would look at the Silkolene Pro S 10w-50 for the engine and the gearbox and diff the Syn5 75w-90. Ideal.

True, either a 10w-40 or 15w-50 semi to run in with.

Plenty to choose from.
