as above, she finishes uni this year and is buying a car around the £5k mark. Car's she likes are Golf TDi/GTi, but these are a little out the price range. She wants something she can insure reasonably, but she is deffo a 'driver' and does like to give it death from time to time (good lass 8) )

So, what other car's are good for a 21 year old with 1 years NCD? I suggested a 172, mainly cos you can get em cheap and they are fast, handle okay and has buttons n stuff to play with... other ideas guys n gals? I did suggest a Williams, but she said it was far to butch and that if she were to get a clio it would have to look girly... only car I could think of were MK2's, which she does like anyway, so 172's surely ideal?

I've got a 1.6 Megane Coupe for sale, i know its no 172 but it looks very sporty and is cheap to insure!

Mike, were not having an MX-5 parked anywhere near the house, least of all in the drive!

One of the finest RWD chassis or so I've been told. Perfect for practising low speed tail out action.

KS has a point.

PKs valver should do the trick.

Good point....Paul's Valver would look the part! :D

Think the valver might fall into the "butch" category also. I reackon the 172 idea is bad one m8, you see how many ppl complain on CS that their 172/182 is suffering continuous problems, so getting a car thats gonna cost her money in the long run is gonna be a bad idea.

The MX5 idea is good IMO or a decent Golf. Dont let her get involved in the money sapping world of french cars, lol

KingStromba

Newer Golfs are just as bad as any other car. Only Jap cars are reliable these days.

What about a SEAT?

couldn't agree more. even the germans have lost their rep for building decent cars... panels and interior problems and not as mechanically sound as a focus... amazing how things change really!

Used car warrenty companies compile lists of the most reliable cars (so they can adjust the cost of their warantees accordingly). Makes interesting reading.

All the top 6 spots occupied by:

Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Nissan and Jaguar i beleive. Ford is high up too.

BMW, VW, Audi, Mercedes are all at the bottom.

So much for 'reputation'

Well, according to JD Powers Ford are the best from the past few years, them Nissan and Toyota. Did you know that in 2.5 years the Celica (newun) did not have any reported breakdowns? It's the most reliable car of all time apparently (hmmm, maybe, not convinced entirely tho).

As far as valvers go I'd love her to get one, but the mileage will put her off, she will want something around or less than 50k on it... hmm, Willy conversion? 8)

There is only one choice for a woman - reliable, pretty, girle, fast (ish) fun to drive (I tooled around in one for a week and prefered the drive to my Clio Cup - not the Williams though - and felt a bit gay!!), get a yellow millenium one with full leather, EVO say +everything -nothing!!

What is it :?: :?:

Ford PUMA of course - even the 1.4 and 1.6 are O.K and cheap(ish) to insure!!!

The Fiesta zetec S is pretty good too and of course the 106 Rallye/GTi

J o n
23-03-2005, 17:43
aah, forgot about the Puma and Zetec S! Well, the Puma is quicker than the Zetec, but the Fezza handles better and is cheaper to insure... I had one as my last car and the handling was absolutely shit hot!

A Williams looks butch? All clio's are girls cars :o

The rallye is a good little car too - had one of those. Most you'll find though are high mileage like the willy these days. On the pug front, theres the XSi too

J o n
23-03-2005, 17:51
What about a SEAT?

she'll prolly need 4... and a steering wheel...

Kel, whats the insurance group for the XSI and Rallye? Also what year did they produce them from and to?

KingStromba
23-03-2005, 18:02
Yeah Racing Puma would be a good car to get, but maybe need 7k to get one. Id have one over a 172 any day.

Swervin_Mervin
23-03-2005, 18:04
TJ, insurance on the Rallye's will be dirt cheap. The best is supposed to be the s1 1.3 though, which may all have high mileage.

Kelly
23-03-2005, 18:09
Yea, I had the 1.3 version in white :D - group 9 I think it was, and the xsi is very similar, maybe a 10. the 1.6 rallye was an 11 iirc :)

Not sure on production years, my 1.3 was a 1994 L reg, I've seen M's around, then the 1.6 version replaced it. Not sure on the XSi

I am looking to get a daily drive, to keep the Williams mileage reasonable. Am gonna get a 306 HDi D turbo. GTI-6 chassis, diesel torque (Tuneit chip things adds 15-20% power increase), good looks and only grp 5 insurance, oh and 55/gallon (600 to the tankful).

Zollo
23-03-2005, 19:24
Puma, Fiesta Zetec, 306 HDi are great ideas. Also, how about...

Focus Zetec (brilliant drive)
Volkswagen Lupo GTi (pocket rocket that's solid and reliable)
Seat Leon Cupra (Nice!)
Seat Ibiza Cupra (Not quite so nice, but look cooler)
Nissan Almera GTi (look crap, brilliant drive)
Honda Civic VTi (quick and reliable)
Toyota Celica GT (look girly and are reliable)
Alfa 147 2.0 Lusso (good image, resonable drive, but unreliability?)
Citroen Xsara VTS (pretty quick, feisty handling a bit much?)
Honda CRX (girly looks, reliable, flash roof, but not great drive)
Peugeot 306 GTi 6 (best car in the world, bit high on insurance?)
MG ZR 160 (raw drive, fast, dodgy image and high insurance?)
Astra SRi (a bit dull to drive, but not too bad!)
Mk4 Golf GTi (can be got for around £5k, but may be high miles)

....no, got it....Sapphire Cossie 2wd. And get another loan for the insurance!

And many more that I can't think of right now!

Magic carpet? :D

I had a Fiesta Zetec S, loved that car!!! Can honestly highly recomend it. It certainly wont set the tarmac alight for straight line pace but round the twisties that could embarress some much more expensive machinery. And they are only group 8 insurance iirc.

My mate had two. He said it was a great handling car....

....until he had a go in a 4 wheel steer Nissan S14 Silvia (non turbo import) :D

yeah, think Northy has a thing for my sister... how'd you guess??? lol

mini is a good idea if it wasn't for the fact they are overpriced pieces of crap.

oh, Zetec S with turbo conversion is gonna be murder on insurance... that would be more suitable for me not her! hehe
