£80 from GSF exchange and 2 hours labour, or do it yourself.

I think £200 is likely to be about right at a garage/specialist.

Book time must be 2 - 2 1/2 hours? If not more..

And if they use a Renault Alternator, they're like £200+ or something INSANE for the Williams from Renault..

i pay 30 quid labour! 20 quid from a breaker!

sorted for £25

Turns out some wires had rubbed and broken over time......ill pick it up later. I'm a happy bunny.

Might find a recon unit though as a spare....

Any idea how long they last roughly?

And so the saga continues....

Same things happened again, after getting the car back, the battery has drained....Assuming the garage is right, and i am wrong (that the problem isnt the alt) what else might it be?

I dont mind replacing the alternator, however i cant afford to do it if it doesnt rectify the problem.

Really starting to lose confidence in the car :(

My alternator has just broken as well, ordered a new one for £85 but gonna try and fit it myself, does anyone know what sort of job this is, I heard its a bit of a pain.

remove bonnet n headlight on drivers side, if u need mite have to get rid of rad n fan n all or at least the plastic cowling.

loosen aux belt tensioner pulley (right slag to do!!) then remove aux belt from alternator pulley. undo connections from back of alternator (2 wires) undo top two mount bolts and bottom pivot mount bolt n slide them all out. lift out alternator

refitting is reverse of removal!!8)

get a multimeter

with the engine running you should see 13.5v minimum at the battery with things like your stereo on, lights, and blowers

ideally, with nothing on apart from the engine running, you want 14.4v

i get 14.6v

I realised that this has all occurred after fitting of a new stereo....so i've taken the stereo out, and had the bad boy on charge.....shortly i'll be going out, armed with a pair of jump leads, a mobile phone, a torch and a thermos.

I'll report back :D

what voltage are you gettin ?

Smokey McPot
07-03-2006, 20:11
anywhere between 0-13.5-14.7ish the alternator works periodically.....

i had one before were the tension wouldnt release, what i did, put loosen the tensioner pulley so you can move it, so the bolt is on its last threads, then put the alternator back in on the bottom bolt, so it moves, then push the alternator towards the engine until it wont go no futher, then put the belt back on, tighten the tensioner pulley a bit, then get a big pry bar, put it betwen inlet manifold and alternator, then pull the alternator with the bar until you can get a top bolt in, then tighten everything up!!
