I've heard it can be done in, with the battery tray out. Or just drop the subframe shurely.

Lunner
27-02-2006, 20:18
it can be removed in the car., BUT the clutch has to be removed with the box still in the car, to get it out, and then has to be put back on and lined up with very little space.

Subframe has to be dropped as far as the bolts will allow for manovering room. But box has to come out the top

Ahh so you drop the subframe off and take it out the bottem, haynes says out the top.

Might have a go with dropping subframe, if it goes tits up will take the engine out, have to borrow a hoist for the engine anyways, i cna get a mate tyo help me with box :)

Justin..
27-02-2006, 21:03
well on the container it says ''automatic transmission and power stearing fluid''.... i win, end of =;

Clio_GTT
27-02-2006, 21:41
you can use ATF, i would have thought gearbox oil would be too thick for PAS, PAS and ATF (automatic transmission fluid) are quite thin, gearbox oil is gunky and horrible :D

Lunner
27-02-2006, 21:42
oi stop hi-jacking my thread

Has anyone else dropped the box out the bottem?

2 live
27-02-2006, 22:01
yes done it a few times now lol..evry time i blow a box up.

leave engine in..drop subby, pull box out from in between the subby an the inner wing...easy as...days work tops out n in..if u workin on yer own that is.

Lunner
27-02-2006, 22:03

Drop subby downa nd lift it out the top, ot taek subby off and drop it out bottem?

Mat.

gearbox oil yes.......definately.

PAS fluid.........no.

i do it by dropping the n/s subframe rite off, engine hoist on the engine, gearbox in hand, ul need to drop the column on the uj at the bulkhead.

hassle hassle hassle

Lunner
28-02-2006, 10:09
so 2 live, do you take it out the bottem or the top?

I'd imagine is dropping the subframe right off it would be easier out the bottom

2 live
28-02-2006, 10:45
read the posts mate

lol

bottom between the inner wing and the subby........as it says ^^^^^ up there in my other post.

Lunner
28-02-2006, 11:39
my bad

Well wuith both 2live and a renault tech saying drop it out the bottom, looks like bottom it is :)

Twincam
28-02-2006, 19:34
Also agree with taking it out the bottom, looks alot more hassle taking the whole engine out

And dropping the subframe doesnt take long, on a lift it only takes bout 4-5 hours to change the gearbox

richy
28-02-2006, 19:40
as i previously said, imo its easyier from bottom, subframe takes sod all time to get off, u dont need to take the shafts rite out just move them out of way, then support engine and pull box off!

Lunner
08-03-2006, 20:04
Well i've been at it for 9 hours today, and just got the the poioint of loosening the gearbox bolts ready to slide it out

Spent hours ****ing with the subframe, trying to seperate the supersprint, ended up unbolting it from the head.

Hopefully get it all back together tomorrow

Spent hours f***king with the subframe, trying to seperate the supersprint, ended up unbolting it from the head.

Exactly

Engine could be out in less than 9 hours! :P

09-03-2006, 10:47
to be fair...the gearbox should have been in and out in that time..

2 bolts out, 2 undone in the s/frame, steerin column pinch bolt, subframe will drop.

Daz
09-03-2006, 10:48
Might be easier in future - I can't imagine subframe bolts being nice to undo if they ain't been undone for 10 years.. :)

Things always take longer when you havent done them before.

Home mechanic-ing is always slow going unless you know exactly what your doing...which for 99% of us we can only dream of!

Good efforts anyway lunner....

when is d-day for this 2.0L beast?

its the little lock tab cage things that secure the nut that are a bastard...n/s ones easy enuff to get at, but the o/s one can be a pain in the ass

Lunner
09-03-2006, 13:50
Yeah tbh if i had known what iw as doing what i did yesterday woudl ahve taken half the time, spent ages tryign ti find nuts and bolts and undoign teh wrong things etc etc

If i did it again i recon i coudl prolly do it in a day.

Just broken for lunch, box is back in, and wires are connected up
next task to is oput the engine mount back on and lift the subframe back up, whihc is gonna be a cunt seeing as i undid all 4 bolts, and i'm working on my own

shunt be too bad gettin the subby back up mate.......main thing to watch out for is to make sure u get the column lined up properly with the rack before u get the subby where u want it. lol.
