was never on the road for more than a week at a time, head gaskets went, boost pipes split (till he got solid ones ) and the final blow was the pressure went too high in the oil, blew the dipstick out of its holder, sprayed oil over the engine bay, then court fire

was a nice car though lol

owned it from 1996-1998. bought it from a guy in wrexham, the starter motor was goosed, but i managed to part ex my well knackered cavalier sri (got £100) + 1800. was well worth it.

first thing i did was get the starter motor fixed. second thing after that, was to break the clutch cable (after about 20 miles of driving).

once i got that out of the way, i had the inevitable cylinder head gasket go (about 1 year on), which also took out the water pump and rad.

had so much fun with the car, acceleration was second to none, but i also had about 3 near death experiences.

i had to sell it after 1 week of company car ownership - somebody decided to try and steal it whilst i was at work.

My m8 owns a Raider.
Car is a dream...
Handles gr8, no squiking from dash or anywhere else and sure is a beauty.
Plus it delivers 200bhp :P
Quite relaible once you decide to push some cash into it

Don`t get me going Daz...I used to have a 223,000 mile minter..basic mods (filter exhaust, bleed and dump valve.) Amazing little car..so much fun and rapid too. I would deffo have another but be prepared to fix something pretty regular (not expensive so don`t worry)

Hmmm Willy or a 5.... :-k

I'd love a five for the experience but I don't want to be going to the garage every week with the thing - one think that worries me too is the fact the more cash you throw in the quicker it gets - not sure if I have the sense to stop!

Willys, know lots about them - know how to spot a shitter and i've got loads of stuff left over from the 16v that could go straight onto the willy...

For a minty mint minty five your looking at 3k... thats willy territory :-k

3k should get you an awesome one m8! I`d say 2k would get you a good one...and the mod wise you obviously get a lot more power for your money being a turbo. When I got my bleed valve (£30) I had 127bhp (std) .....one very small twist later and it was 150bhp!

I've had three and up until No.3 I thought they the greatest cars in the galaxy. No.3 Had the usual turbo/head probs. Then one thing after another, water hoses splitting, actuator hose split, bloody acc pump rod falling off. spent ages rebuilding in the snow (why does it snow in Feb. these days?).
Final straw was when I gave it it's first proper 'drive' after spending the entire three months that I owned it fixing it. The throttle somehow got stuck fully open. Tried to stall it, cooked the clutch. Tried to free throttle (still running @ 5k). Finally just switched off engine followed by the loudest ever backfiring shooting out burning pieces of exhaust muffler material.

Moral: You think fixing Clios is bad, wait till you get a Five.

Anyway for £3k You probably won't have to worry about that cuz it'll be mintier than Trebor Xtra Strong.
Tho I'd rather pay £1.5k-£2k for a good standard one, than 3k for a 200bhp monster

I still like R5's but I wouldn't want another one. Working on them makes you realise how outdated and badly designed the engines are.

My story...

Bought for £125 from a mate (driven it plenty of times before, so I knew it was fine).

Picked up at 9am.

Thrashed around all morning and came upon a 325i, wound the boost up, blew him away, blew lots of white smoke into his distance face.

Dead at 1am

Stripped for parts for about a grand :P

Cool car 8)

Flew down to bristol to buy the car which had just been rebuilt, so had to nurse it all the way home to N.E.SCOTLAND at 50-60mph, how much of a ball ache was that, the Adjustable coilovers were set ROCK hard to stop the 18" BK's rubbin the arches, felt like i'd done the Dakar once i got home, anyway ran it in, opened it up, BLEW IT, so 1 expensive rebuilt l8r (all k-tec, bb, gt-t etc good for 30psi boost) away we went again, lasted longer this time, got a few trackdays, ran 13sec runs WITH THE 18's on was an absolute flyer, was R/R'd at 198bhp at 27psi was alway afraid ti give it the last 3-4psi just incase, but got a bit fed up of it, it was stripped out had that Mad Prima BackBox which rattled ur teeth, no stereo, got too much considering Crail is my nearest track 3-4 hour drive?! Was FUN while it lasted, i'll try and dig out the spec sheet and put it up some time!!!

Nice for kitted R5 8)
In the picture it looks like the plenum actuator pipes have been linked together to blank them off, so where did the actuator hose go to?

I owned a 196bhp 5gtt

Wicked motor!

Drive one!

handles like a go kart!

Cheap tax (1.4ltr)

However dont buy one!

Prone to rott

Engine well where to start
Overheats
Overboosts
oil over pressurises
Engine explodes
Tyres are expensive for the original alloys 13"
Headgaskets are weak as hell

i owned a five for 1 year

I replaced 3 oil pumps, 4 hed gaskets, 2 turbo's (due to oil pump), mastercylinder, both rear calipers (rust), 1 carb.

think thats it off the top of my head!

On the plus side it is the most fun car i have ever had !
Would have another if i won the lottery.

an has the nicest sounding exhaust is deffo the ktec sidey!

I'd like to see what ex owners think if them.

Not and ex owner but here's what I think........

I've had 5's since I was 18 (21 now)
My 1st one ran like a dream, bought in april '03 and never had anything go wrong with it.......come feb '04 and someone decided to drive into the side of it writing it off.
My 2nd one I've had since dec '04. this one ran fine till my uses for it became less and less so its now off the road having a full suspension overhaul and engine rebuild.

At the end of the day if you tune something incorrectly on any car its always going to go wrong, however do something properly and it'll last longer.

Advice wise I would say the 5 is a bit more of a high maintainance car then maybe most out there (although my 1st 5 cost near on nothing extra before she was killed)......modified well and there plenty quick enough and shouldn't cause you too much headaches as long as its looked after, on the otherhand get one, whack up the boost (forget about other aspects of the engine i.e cooling and fuelling) and you really have only yourself to blame if it all goes tits up, which it prob will.

Soz for the essay:)
