castrol cheap crap
I'm just away to put halfords motorsport 5w50 fully synth in my F7R.
We'll c how it goes but tbh it cant be any worse than the shite i have in now 10w40 semi synth! Horrible stuff!
5w40, esp in the winter
*w50 is overkill on a clio unless its a proper race car.
I use shell helix or silkoline, silkoline is cheaper, but its the hassle of ordering it, about £40 for 5 ltrs of silkoline, its about £50 or so for helix
helix isnt even in the same league as silkolene
im currently using Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL in 5W-40, its close to Silkolene and cheaper.......both are better than Helix, and probably cheaper when you pay petrol station prices
ok cool. where about can i get this silkoline oil - is it only around 40 for 5 litres?
what grade should i go 4 - 5w40 or 10w40
and should it be fully synth or semi synth
sorry 2 ask so many questions
fully synthetic
5W-40
buy it from www.opieoils.co.uk
pm oilman on here, he works@/owns opie oils, they do offers all the time

auto data book says "grade 10w 30 classification sj/a2-96 or 10w 40 sj/a2-96 and 6.2L ??? not too sure on the 6.2 L tho renault say 5.1L
its not 6L.......mine took 5L, 10W-30 is too thin for these engines.....
see link also can be used for low milage older cars ..
this is good can get it from halfords but need to order

like i said thats what renault recommend throught auto data id say its bollox mine only takes 5.1L and i use 10w40 as its free from work :)
buying some new oil and a flush now, so what should i go for?
is 5w30 overkill then or what?
im using magnatec at the mo.......
no underkill, wont' handle the temps properly, using a *W50 is overkill
5W40, or 10W40, preference on 5W40
does it matter so much about the make? i have just got quoted £20 from brown brothers for 5L of 5W 40 fully synth DX oil. not heard of DX myslef
yeah better quality oil beens better performance, and longer life resulting in less engine wear and engine lasting longer

You like to use shell helix don't you?
Silkoline Pro preferably, but its so much easier to pick helix up from petrrol stations, fooking more expensive than silkoline tho
is it? £15 for 5l of 5w-40. Surely you mean silkolene is more expensive
Just ordered some silkolene pro s 5W40 from oilman :D
Which engine flush do u guys Recommend ?
Cheers

did you pay £40+?

where is Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 £15 for 5L........its not even that cheap trade price exc VAT, we can get it at work
I wouldn't bother with an engine flush.. not worth the hassle, heh.
39.99 inculding p&p
yer same as what he offered me. im reluctant to put that in if i consrquently have to do some engine work. just a waste of oil and £40!

swear thats what the tag at the bottom of the shell rack said last time i was in there. Walked up to it after paying for the petrol just to be sure.
If they have priced it wrong, that's their fault and i'll get some.
the 10W40 int eh blue bottel is that price for 4l, the ultra in the black bottle is £40 for 4l iirc

oh thought the ultra was blue packaging. My mistake must have been 10w then. Still gonna use that though and save myself £25.
Looking in my Williams Manual.. it says 15w40 -> 15w50.
Haynes confirms this also..
I'm the only one running 15w50 up to now!
Everyone I've spoken to recommends 5w40 also? Heh..

IMHO, as long as your are not using the thin ?W-30 oils for old engines, it should be fine. I have actually used ?W-60 and could not tell the difference in engine performance (ie: neither faster nor slower). I think synthetic oils are better these days, thus the old rule of switching to thicker oils on old engines are less relevant.

Don't use an engine flush with hydraulic tappets, if you want to clean the engine just change the oil and put some cheap oil in, run it briefly, then change the oil for some quality stuff.
Mat.
cheers for the advice Mat :D

Agreed. Just used some whynns engine flush on mine as the tappets were getting noisey on cold starts, but its even worse now!
Any suggestions?

As above, quick oil change using cheap oil.
You need to try and get the flushing agent out.
Could try turning the engine over by hand while draining oil to squeeze the fluid out of them, will be a bit noisey on start-up tho.
Disconnect the main HT lead when first cranking up after refilling to build up some oil pressure.
Mat.
I was told changing the oil whilst hot is as good as using any of the engine flush efforts???

Is always better done when the engine is hot, just makes the squeezing your arm in a bit more perilous. :P

thats because the manual was printed almost 15 years ago, they didnt have the oils then that we have now, and didnt know as much
5w-40 all the way, soooooo much quieter n smoother n heats up sharpish n all for soem reason! good clean oil rules!! :D
