Well the car has suffered for a bit and on cold start it taps away for about 5 mins until it starts to get warm, I just changed the oil yesterday and i was running 10w-40 now 15w-40, still taps. how much is this gonna cost me to fix? should i use another grade oil, or let it warm up and thrash it up the motorway to give it a good clean out. It hasnt been thrashed in a while!

I used some Wynns top end treatment after having a similar problem. Then i drove the car for 1000 miles this weekend. Its never sounded better :)

Give that a try first.

surely changing the oil for 15w-40 will make it tap even more. It always has when i've used that thickness. Stick to 5w-40 or a good 10w.

mine are dreadful at the moment on cold starts.

im gonna change the oil and filter next weekend, and go for some 5w40 fully synth stuff, along with some nice top end treatment.

lifters will be getting a refurb in april anyway!

Ive just stuck some of that in mine, had it in there for about a week but havent done much mileage, couple hundred miles tops.

Did it take you the full 1000 miles fopr you to see a change? Does it now sound quiet on cold starts?

EDIT - Just noticed you used top end treatment, i used their "Valve lifter treatment", so mine might not be as effective as yours?

what do people recommend in terms of quiet tappets for 5w40 oils?

or to put it another way - any oils to stay away from?

wouldnt running 5w40 give lower oil pressure when hot ??

Why valve steam oil seal could do with replacing and I think if I run 5w40 it will be smoking every were lol

Justin..

i put 5w 40 in mine, killed the oil pressure lol

I am running 10w40 with Wynnes stop smoke and it worked a treat

but I wanted to try 15w40 to see if I could get away with not adding any stop smoke etc.

I get 1.2Bar at idle at just over 100 degrees oil temp with 5W40 in mine. What you get?

Justin..

sometimes 0.8 other 0.5 bar at around 80 degrees doesnt seem to go much higher temperature wise

Well fellas and anyone else, semi sorted the problem, i changed the oil and let the bugger warm up properly, then took it for a decent thrash, keeping it at 4000rpm in third for awhile, got the oil temp above 100 degrees a couple of times, started it the next day and it was alot better.

smokey - im gonna get some of that top end stuff sounds like it may help

Brun - yes im using magnatec and have done for the last year

i have worked out that, i have only been pootling around for the last couple of months and havent got the temp above a 100 degrees, cause of the crap weather and not risking smashing up the willy. In this day and age insurance co's wont fix them. So i recommend you get the car on the motorway and hammer it when warm, thanks for all the help.

Shell Helix semi synth 10/40 is what I use and runs very nicely with no tappety cold starts. I'd use Shell Helix Ultra 5/40 fully synth if I was going for a track day as it copes with the higher temps better. Semi synth is fine for every day use tho. Stay clear of Mobil 1, horrible stuff!!

its well known to cause these engines to run noisy, ive no idea why but it does

my mums Nissan Sunny runs on it though and thats done over 150k and still runs like new, really quiet
