View Full Version : Separating head/BE properly?

I'm hopefully going to be posting my engine off soon but the BE needs separated first as the buyer of that won't want/need the head.

Whats the best way of going about this as i don't want to damage the BE or cause unnecessary work for whoever is reassembling it?

I'd have thought just cut the cambelt and remove the head but thought i'd better make sure...?

Remove cambelt and progressivly loosen the headbolts

if any damage should occur it will be the head that warps. thats whats the worst situation imo

Ah cool thats what i thought initially but i've heard talk of locking the crank etc...guess thats just for bolting it together again.

hammer and chisel  lol

nah just make sure u undo them as said above, should be ok id personally set it to tdc like, but up to u

What if i don't - is that gonna cause much extra hassle for whoever is refitting? Can anyone give me a quick how-to in TDC'ing it?

all u need to do is turn it over and make sure number 1 or 4 piston is to the top, and the camshaft marks ar both at the top inline with were the rocker cover marks are

Set it to tdc big guy, then it's easier for whoever gets it!!!!!

Will do.

To TDC it/turn it over, i take it i just put a socket onto the crank pulley or something similar?

correct, its a piece of piss to do mate :)

Excellent.

Right: update, I've TDC'd it (fook me that was easy...i feel daft now!) but i've another issue (i assume clio heads have this too);

once i removed the cam cover to get at the head bolts i found that there is a bracket at the pulley end which kind of hangs over the outside of the head allowing the top cambelt cover to be attached via two central bolts. Unfortuanely this obscures 2 of the headbolts from what i can see and i can't seem to get it undone!

Does it have a wierd (reverse) thread as i can't seem to shift it going anti-clockwise and i don't want to damage it by forcing it!

Its a shitty torx bolt too which makes it even more difficult...

Justin..

bah if the thread strips out just whack a heli coil in 8) pence

It not that i'm worried about - i'm scared that if i force it the torx will disintegrate and there'd be no option but to grind it off! Unfortunatly that would kind of render the meg head useless (unless it could be drilled out).

A garage would no doubt get it off easily but me with my halfords socket set are struggling...

No idea mate, but be careful!!!!

I'm sure 2live, northy etc will know, I don't remember there being anything when i replaced my cam cover, where abouts is it?

u can get the head off with this in place mate.......u only need to remove the cam cover/rocker cover to get the head off.

Success!

Not an easy job at all...guess this is really meant to be done while in the car or on a proper engine stand, not a garage floor!

At the suggestion of Neal and Nick Hill over on f7power i shifted the pistons to mid-stroke because if i cut the belt at TDC theres apparently the tendancy for the valves to jump down (when the cams shift to one of their 4 natural rest positions) and hit the piston crowns? TDC'ing can be done with the head off anyway.

Still its done now....thanks for assistance all those who replied :)

whats all the shite on the r/h piston

u33db
15-02-2006, 20:54
Just oil...the engine was sitting on its back when it got delivered to me and while i was undoing the head bolts (for leverage). When i lifted the head off, oil spilled out of the oil ways....guess it wasn't drained fully.

U - on the second piston in from the right hand whats that crap on the pic?

Also are all the bores smooth, is there a lip at all and all pistons flat at the top, no marks etc?

Did it seperate ok?

Cheers

Danny

Yeah, separated fine once the bolts came off...bloody tight tho!

Mark on that piston is just oil and a bit of carbon...i'll clean them up before i put the 1.8 head on tho.

All bores are smooth and as they're suppossed to be. :)

watching this with lots of interest mate, am hopin to do exactly the same build when i got some cash!! is the idea to drop it into a clio or a 19?

16-02-2006, 21:20
I think danny drives a clio....

I'm not - i bought the meg engine to put in my 1.2 but for various reasons thats fallen through so i'm getting rid. Danny only needs the bottom end for obvious reasons so this is just to get that sorted. 8)

do F7 engines have dry cylinder liners?

When i did my E7J, the head was really stuck on and took a pretty large force for it to come off. I was freaking at this point worrying about dislodging the liners.

u33db
18-02-2006, 20:56
Yes, theres no wet liners on F7 engines.
