Hi All!

Well the Trophy is back with Reno for more warranty work, which gave me the chance to get out in the missus' Williams again, and the steering is totally knackered!

I'm pretty sure it is the column that is the problem, as when we bought the car 18 months ago, we replaced the steering rack and track rod ends with new parts, and got a column from a scrappy, which feels as though it has now given up. There is about an inch of play either side of straight ahead and no movement from the front wheels when the steering wheel is turned within this 2 inch zone.

Through searching on this exceptionally helpful forum  , it seems like getting the column welded could be the solution, so back to the point of my post, is there anyone in the south east who does this welding work?

Thanks all! :D

I guess I don't know for sure if it is definitley the column, but through doing a search on this forum and following the advice that has already been posted, and doing some detective work on the car itself, it seemed to be the logical answer.

Just can't be arsed with having to fork out for a new column and the labour to get it fitted, or with having to find a decent one from a scrappy, and it seems that the welding option, if it really does work, could be the most cost effective remedy!

it u can move the wheel left and right a bit and the front wheels dont move then that is play in the joint and 95 % will be your column.mine had very little play, to the point where we wasnt even sure if it needed doing.we welded it up anyway and it made sooo much difference.

Neil, is your mate with the Valver the one who was with us on the shoot? Surprised it's still going after hearing the stories

If anyone wants their steering columns welded, Jim is the person to go to. Top guy to have a chat with too 8)

2live will do it cheaper and quicker apparently , but he lives in the wrong area
