We all know about leaving a car in gear if your on a steep hill, well any hill really, and if the cars handbrake fails the car rolls onto gear and stops the car from going anywhere...

Now if the handbrake failed while left it in gear - would it ever be possible for the gearbox or something to "give" and let the car roll freely down the hill?

Can't really think of the right way of asking this question!

If you are worried about both failing while parked, just stick a brick or a big rock under a tyre to stop it rolling. Or just kerbed the front tyres against the pavement when parked.

I very much doubt that the force of a car on a hill could wreck a gearbox. maybe pop out of gear if your box was already a bit fooked ?

this is why i'm curious - highly unlikely I suppose but its quite worrying that your car could wander off on you!

I never use the handbrake, always just leave it in gear.

You don't have to make contact with the pavement to kerb it. Just angle the front wheel towards the pavement when you park.
