i have a chance to buy a 165k mile williams

this sounds like a hell of alot of miles

apparently the engine is smooth and you'd never guess the mileage is tis high from driving it??

is this a risk paying 1500 for this car on such a high mileage and will the beast only last a few hundred miles more before she's ready to retire?

whats highest milage williams any of you lot know of?

any advice appreciated

matt

matt uk

really

just seems like a lot of ****in miles

how far can these engines actually go?

Lunner
15-01-2006, 19:35
£1500 is pretty cheap is it not?

COuld always buy it and overhaul the engine, take it back to new(ish)

big hp
15-01-2006, 19:36
Stromba bought one on around 150k IIRC.

As long as the engines good then it wouldn't bother me too much.

Theres a couple of valvers on here with 150k and still going strong. As long as there looked after they'll last forever.

what should i look out for then on such a high mileage car when going to buy it?

any tips dont wanna buy a time bomb waiting to go off...

as long as the bodywork is a ok i dont see the problem. u can alway rebuild the engine/put a new one in easy

FATBOY
15-01-2006, 19:42
what number williams 1 is it?

Andyvalver
15-01-2006, 19:44
Make sure the box feels ok. Nowt worse than havin to take the engine out straight away.

matt uk
15-01-2006, 19:44
its a williams 2

no number

6 months MOT no tax

recent clutch les than 300 mile ago

Lunner
15-01-2006, 19:45
Get it MOTed, will pick up on any little faults etc

FATBOY
15-01-2006, 19:48
am i right in saying if its a shit pit then he could easily get his 1.5k back by stripping and selling the parts off?

Lunner
15-01-2006, 19:49
Yup, but its the hassle of it

matt uk
15-01-2006, 19:49
so basically make sure gearbox is ok

things that seem to always be up with my valvers are ****in wheel bearings

are the williams prone to these ****in up too?

matt uk
15-01-2006, 19:50
i think for £1500
i cant go to wrong can i?

whats the worst that could happen :D

FATBOY
15-01-2006, 19:51
think so? ive had one go on my willy 3 in the past 2 years but thats it! whats the deal with the bearings? cheap enough to get sorted? or is it just the pain of doing it mate?

FATBOY
15-01-2006, 19:52
what ya got at the mo then matt?

Lunner
15-01-2006, 19:52
Pretty much no, just make sure shell is sound, engine can be rebuilt/replaced, shell is more of a cunt to sort

Lunner
15-01-2006, 19:53

as said mate, as long as bodywork is ok you can buy a new engine

winston @ LTR has one dont he lads? £450 + fitting

that just over 2k and u got urself a minta of a car

but then, the miles dont just relate to the engine, 150k or whatever it was will not be good on the suspension, bushes, wishbones, cv, steering rack, PAS

there are alot of other things that can go wrong mate other than the engine

matt uk
15-01-2006, 19:58
there not that bad

it outruns my mates valver too 100mph from standing start and thats dyno'd at 141bhp with zorst and decat and filter

my swift is about 105bhp but only 730kg ;)

i'll never sell it i'd keep it as a runaround
bullet proof jap engine, forged pistons

1.3 16v gti

matt uk
15-01-2006, 19:59

Gav
15-01-2006, 20:12
bite to bullet and do it matey, may live to regret it, only 3 owners, that aint half bad...and prev owner brought it a good 2-3 yrs ago so he/she has properly used it

go buy it dude

matt uk
15-01-2006, 20:13
i'm realy tempted

cant i just pay some extra $$$ to a garage and have the engine/box fully checked and little bits replaced taht may be more worn than other bits.

dunno what i'm talking about really

i wouldnt mind if it was a toyota or honda on that many miles but a RENAULT lol

would the BHP be affected by this many miles
probably only as fast as a valver lol

and there slow....

Gav

Quite a few of our cars come up as 5-doors too. As Fatboy says, ignore it!

I say go for it Matt, if that's all you can afford. You certainly get what you pay for when it comes to a Williams, but if you can't spend any more, there's no reason a 165k old one will be particularly worse than any other 1500 quid example.

matt uk
15-01-2006, 21:05
adding to the problem is the fact that the car is over 300 miles from me!

if i risk a train down at £80 for a ticket and the cars a nail.. i'll have to pay another £80 to get home with no car!

also £50 petrol if the car is ok

so thats a further £150 ontop of the initial 1500
then another £93.50 for tax

brings the total to......

£1750 should i just shop around?????

Zollo
15-01-2006, 21:07
Where abouts is the car?

just got home guys

4.5 hour drive! back from plymouth to nottingham

anyway the cars bodywork is MINT and the wheels are 9/10 for sure

will get pics up tomorrow when i have chance as its pitch black now

list of probs i'lkl have fixed tomorrow:

exhaust clanging about

play in steering (needs welding)

list of probs i dunno how to fix:
so help me please!!!

petrol gauge is stuck on halfway

rev counter sometimes has a mind of its own... even at a steady 3.5k (70mph) its jumping about betwwen 3-4k revs but with no affect to the actuall cars revving...... odd

also the car misfires if you try and floor it, this happens 75% of the time and expecially when cold!. if you take it steady and are light footed the thing drives great. any ideas? this is the main problem i really wanna sort.

anyway after it got warm and i took it steady for a bit i nailed it in 3rd and 4th... didnrt misfire until about 10 seconds into the "hammering it part" so it cant be that serious of a problem cause it was bloody fast!

if anyone knows anything on how to fix this misfire or lives anywhere near nottingham i'll gladly bring it down for you too look at and see if you can sort it for some $$ obviously.

it bound to be just a sensor or plugs surely?

cheers
