Only marks car out of those other cars are whats classed as SAFE !!! Don't mount harnesses from rear seatbelt points, theres too much give in the harnesses and at a low speed crash you will find yourself hitting the steering wheel

Thats not true, i stayed firmly in my seat when i went inot the back of someone doing about 20/30, and also when i went sideways up a kerb, became air bourne, hit a lampost 4 ft up, and then bounced 4 ft off and came to a stop....all i got was whiplash.

I'm trying to get a harness bar made up but Team Think are ignoring me atm lol

You were lucky then mate in the jan edition of track and race cars it shows you what to do and what not to do, idealy mounted off a cage but your idea of a bar would me more than adequate, the G forces exerted on the harnessess at even a 30 mph crash is enough for the harnesses to stretch a lot especially when they are really long and mounted at the rear seatbelt points.

u got any pics of these mate, im after one for mine, i dont like the fact the harness's are bolted to the floor on mine, but untill i get a cage a harness bar is what i need!!

well i can try and get one that he made for his nova, but its basically just a rear strut brace but obvously its good for yous lot coz he can get the measurements straight from my car, i mite get him to make me one up

gibbo. your car looks ace. never realised it was a stripped out slag as well! good effort with the cage and fire system etc. looks mental!

ill get pics of mine 2morrow! no decent ones with the carbon door cards on my pc currently!

Surely its fine to mount the harnesses where Jan and martin have them mounted. Rear bottom seatbelt mounts. There is very little chance of hitting the steering wheel with mine. i feel much safer than with a normal seatbelt.

I used to have mine there, but moved them up to where they are now as they aren't supposed to be more than 45 degrees from the horizontal, or they can cause spinal injuries

Ahhh!

As for harnesses...i suppose the only place to mount them is the rear seatbelt upper mounts then? unless you have a cage....or a harness bar?

Thats the pink and the white ones are a 1991 - 1995 clio cup race car spec mate. The pink one is a late model lucky one.

They come up for sale every now and again, but most are well worn.

The spec is devil roll caged, standard valver shelled & running geared sealed ecu clio with cat & standard fuel tank kept in place.

The pink ones been modded though.

I'm thinking the same?

Are you sure that the harnesses give sprinal injuries when mounted on the bottom rear seatbelt mounts!???

Seems like a lot of people have them there!!! :?

looking good mate, lovin the doorcards!

even the cup racers have their harnesses mounted to the rear floor!

Clio_GTT
11-01-2006, 19:02
I'll try and scan in the article that i've read on harnesses, but basically when they are mounted to the floor the angle of the harness is all wrong, its all about forces and angles etc. With a heavy but slow frontal crash, 31 mph to 0 mph in 400mm the G force can be upto 30G which is enough to stretch the harnesses enough to make you headbutt the steering wheel with longer harnesses and where they are mounted to the floor can cause serious spinal injuries and even death.

Shoulder Belt Routing:
*Shoulder belts must be run from the shoulders horizontally, at no more than a 20° angle.
*In cases where the shoulder belts must be routed down to the chassis floor, support by a roll cage bar or harness guide at the appropriate height is essential to establish the horizontal shoulder strap routing off the shoulder. Most racing seats are not designed and tested to carry shoulder belt crash loads from downward installation. Severe injury or death could result. A 45° downward shoulder is possible with seats that Schroth has positively tested to take a load measured during a 31mph and 28G impact with a 75kg (175lb) dummy.
*For the best restraint of the occupant's upper torso, anchor points should be no further than 200mm (8") from the rear of the users seat.
*In the event that the anchor points are further towards the rear of the vehicle (using a roll cage bar for wrap around attachment) the distance between the anchorage points will narrow or even cross over (≥500mm)

Mint stew where you pick up the carbon bits from...winston?

richy
11-01-2006, 20:14
btw i moved mine back from the upper belt mounts due to length of harness's and the fact if the car gets hit hard at the back the harness wouldnt hold u in if they moved forward due to crash! hopefulyl sort out a cage or harness bar soon

Anyone know how these sidemounts work on the cobra seats (imola etc) ? do they need sidemounts and a subframe ? or just sidemounts ? also how much are they ?

Craig
11-01-2006, 21:47
iv got sparco ones whuch are v similar!

iv mounted them on sparco runners so i can adjust the seat, but they bolt straight into the 2 floor bars! they dont fit the OE mounting holes tho, so iv strengthened them all underneath for safety and that!

seat is solid where it is, altho id imagine its much easier if you got the correct subframe to fit the car

the cobra ones are £50 each

Some wicked pics there lads :)

Any ideas how much the Williams will weigh after being stripped similar to those posted above?

Craig
11-01-2006, 23:12
id say about 900kg or less! maybe a tad more with a cage in (about 25kg i think they weigh in at average)

Dan_mk1
12-01-2006, 12:42
Ive done a bit of stripping, im gonna weigh it on sunday! Ill let you know...

stew
12-01-2006, 12:59
I need to weigh mine next time im home, and the local grain yard is open. They have an ACE weightbridge...not sure how much they charge mind! :?

TBH if its stripped with lightweight seats in...it should be around 900kg's with not much fuel in it and no people

Cant really loose too much more weight.....

Next thing would be polycarbing the windows (like martin is doing/has done) and fibreglass bonnet skin.

Suppose fully removing the dash, and mounting the dials etc to the bulkhead would save a fair bit.

Removing heater matrix etc is an option as well. Not very practical though!

I weighed my leather seats (for postage) the other day....60kg's!

Thats both fronts and rears.

Replaced with cobra imolas (6.5kg's each) plus lightweight side mounts (1kg each) So I saved 45kg's from that alone!

The rear straps in the back of mine are too long, even at the shortest setting cus i ahve my seats so far back wherew the harness splites to go accross the shoulders this catches on the back of the seat and there is no tension on the main back bit.

Gonna get a harness bar and 3" 5 point harnesses sorted soon tho
