View Full Version : car pas "very noisy" after clutch/cambelt change.

had no problems whatsoever before with pas.
since clutch/cambelt change pas is very very noisy. have complained to the garage, and the owner says that the pas was drained and new belt fitted.

he says the pas is worn and its not his fault.

i dont mind paying for the new pump, but how much labour charge should i pay him for fitting the pas?

full/half/token/none?

hes already done that. according to the pas specialist that he rang, the pump was worn, and draining it has nadged it.

hes tried tension and new fluids, but to no avail.

im expecting him to ring me up with news of a replacement pas pump. but after spending 946 to sort out clutch/cambelt and other small odds and sods, i would expect to pay for the pump, but as for the fitting, i wouldnt expect a full bill.

his initial response was "trapped air" go away and so will the noise. well, after 8 days of trying to bleed it, it didnt go away.

as far as im aware, replacing the pas pump may take a while, i think im in my rights to pay as little as possible for his labours, seeing as it was a1 before it went in....?

Replacing the PAS pump costs a fortune in labour and parts. Why was it drained?

it was drained because of the work done to get to the clutch and cambelt change.

2 minutes after i drove off, i went back to say the car wasnt right. i was told it was just needing bleeding.

8 days later, he got a phone call to say that it still wasnt right. we agreed to drop my car off on the 3rd jan.

he has had the car 7 days tomorrow, and ive had a courtesy car.

in all my experiences with garages, ive always had the return "fix" done for free or at parts cost - most memorable was when the wrongly fitted heat shield on my r5t set on fire. i paid for a new shield, they fitted it for free.

im fairly mechanically minded, but would rather pay somebody to do a proper job, than bodge it myself. the work that has been done on the clutch/cambelt and all other work so far at this garage has always been a1 (if a bit expensive, but id rather pay a bit more and have piece of mind).

im just hoping that the owner sees this as an error on his part, and not another excuse to rack up some more dough from my wallet.

There was no need at all to drain to the PAS system to do the clutch AFAIK. Cambelt just requires the belt to be removed.

I'd tell him that he shouldn't have drained it and so it's his fault.

i second that matey! no need to drain it atall! its a closed system seperate from the engine, only point of contact is the aux belt n pump, but that dont need moving for cambelt or clutch!!

only thing is pipes run over the gearbox so maybe movin them made it easier for him, but it sure as hell aint necessary, n its common knowledge that pumps are held together by the crap in em, he shud of known not to drain it if he could possibly avoid it!!

GUILTY ur honour! buy the pump n he fits it for sweet fa or in future u bad press him n go elsewhere with ur hard earned cash!!

The pipes on mine run round the edge of the subframe and shouldn't be an issue.

I had mine re-conditioned last year and cost me £100 in total including re-fitting.

This was at a place in Greenwich, not much use if you aren't that close by.

theres a slight whisper when turning, but that would be being very picky.

lock to lock, theres no grumble or grind.

theres no "tram" type noise whilst acceleration.

new pump.

old pump lost a lot of "power" after being drained. (it was on its last legs, and was a bit noisy at the lock ends previous to clutch/cambelt work.

ive covered most bases now with work done, so apart from fuel/tyres and a bit of car wax, i should be good to go for the year :lol:
