Anyone tried one on a willy?? Any problems, particularly with the speedo drive, is it different? I think they have a sensor that pops in where the cable goes on the williams but does it use the same speedo drive?

Oh, and does the megane mount marry up to the battery tray or do I need to get the old metalwork skills polished up?

iirc the mount fittings were slightly different so u had to use the mount off whichever car, but it sat at a slight angle to normal iirc(not sure if this is true) and needs to be filed etc to bring it level, cant say about the speedo, never looked into it myself, but im sure someone will have, btw i reccomend u get a r19 gearbox mount aswell, the 172/182 run them as std now aswell and upper mount on the box

Cheers for the info mate. Do I have to drill a hole through the subframe to fit the R19 mount

richy
05-01-2006, 20:08
no the hole is already there, u will have to move PAS pipe out way if its solid/metal type to fit it, but mines been moved for almost 12mow and no problems

the mounts on the megane box are different. there is a hole for the speedo cable at the back as normal.

here is one i prepared earlier:

i was told if u use the meg mount it would fit, not tryed it myself so not sure if true

What about the clio 172 mount. They have the same battery tray as the mk 1 clios. Or do their JC5 boxes have the smaller triangle JC3 or valver type holes.

Or even changing the casing over. You see mine has a broken diff and I've been quoted £250 fora rebuild and cant get another williams box but I have a megane 2.0 coupe one now.

VIPERONE
05-01-2006, 22:34
the ratios are different mate..there are many variants of the jc5

tricky
05-01-2006, 22:57
I know the ratios are different the question is are the caseings the same on the megane and 172 as I have a megane box and was just looking to buy a 172 mount in order to fit it to my clio.

wen i thought about fittin a 172 or 182 box in my willy i was told they would fit and work but the speedo wudnt work with 1 ( cant remember which 1 now ) as 1 of them uses electrical pulses 4 the speedo and the willy uses mechanical so might be worth checkin this out!

think i posted about it on here sum time back!

the cup gearbox is mechanical speedo drive

the 172/182 box is electric

i'll get you some pics of the mounting

stan

the actual out put of both is mechanical tho...

u cant use the megane box on a clio. doesnt matter if u use the meg mount....as gibbo said, i tries and it didnt work..

basically the mount site 2 inches out, making the engine/box sit too far to the left....i found out the hard way when my rear mount wouldnt line up!! wasnt til i took it out and measured the g.box mounting points that i realised why!

What kind of mounting is on the 172 gearbox stan?? Is it the same pattern as the williams or the megane?

TBH mate i dont know

tricky
08-01-2006, 15:47
Well, I dont think I'll bother messing with the meggy box, think it'll just get ebayed.

You've given me some expert advice so I think I'll just get a new gearbox. Dont want to be doing the ol' gearbox hokey kokey more than once. lol Especially without that removeable slam pannel. Right pain that makes it.

use the 19 style mount, problem solved.

J o n
17-01-2006, 15:23
is that the problem solved re the megane box or the 172 box??? i'm confused... I ask as my mate has a megane box waiting to be picked up but i've been told it wont fit... :?

Chris H
17-01-2006, 15:32
the pic fred put up before mine, thats a 172 box, not the black bracket on the left side of it.

Thats a 19 style lower mount, thats what the 16V cup cars used. this means the hanging mount isn't needed.

J o n
17-01-2006, 15:44
Chris, you'll have to bear with me, i'm retarded when it comes to mechanics... so, if my mate uses a 19 mount then the upper mount under the battery tray that sits at that funny angle wont actually be needed? of have I misunderstood you completely? pmsl

Chris H
17-01-2006, 16:11
yes the gay clio mount under the battery can be binned.

Your fav bestest pal in the world stromba has pics up of it on f7power as well.

Fred
17-01-2006, 16:43
if its not needed, then why do we snap them??

Chris H
17-01-2006, 16:57
snap what?

17-01-2006, 17:00
hanging mount by battery i presume! :?

Chris H
17-01-2006, 17:02
thats what I thought, but why would you have that mount if you converted to the other mount? You wouldn't, unless you were 'special'

TIMMY!

J o n
17-01-2006, 18:44
yeah mine snapped only the other week... quite scary... think a 19 mount is required. if I remember rightly you need the 19 night and day one from the 1.4, as the other ones dont quite fit, Mehdi had this prob when we took it up to Warrington, luckily Mike had done this before... lol

nice one doo, that sorts that problem out then... one other thing, will this mount help prolong the life of the gearbox, few people have even packed the mouts with sealant...

Chris H
17-01-2006, 18:48
any 19 mount and brackwet will do apart from the TD 19's. They are all the same.

This mount will prevent it swining about as much and should help prevent so much wheelspin.

i fitted a r19 lower mount when my upper mounts decided to snap(3times)!! not had any problems since

the 172/182 both run the upper and lower mount on the box as std

Sorry to dig this up, just wandering - could i run a megane coupe JC5 with an R19 lower mount and bin the upper valver mount ?

Does anyone have a pic of the R19 gearbox mount on a williams/valver?

Also, does anyone have the part numbers to obtain the R19 gearbox mount from Renault?

I need to add one, just need to make sure i get the right bits!

Cheers.

Does anyone know what box is in the hill climb car that was at Hill Power?

I've just bought a hybrid with a 172 gearbox and it uses a mount above the box. I think the mount was custom made though.

It's on my drive  .

If I get a chance I'll get the batter yoff and try to get some pics tomorrow. It was mays off the forum that got it put on the car, you could try PM'ing him to find out more about it, or I can ask him where he got it done if I speak to him tommorow as I think I'll be phoning him.

I have to say though that the gearbox feels sooo much better than any normal Mk1 box i've ever used.

You can 100% use the standard 172 / megane gearbox mount.. a simple modification is required to the meg 172 mount to enable useage... ive done it, and a number of my mates have..currently Hooligan on here is running with the modded mount. Using my old mint megane box..which was given to winston thinking it could never be used.. then a mount was developed at the area 51 works in bury... i have one in my garage.. was going to sell but keeping it for the turbo.. need a good diesel bo><.

I had a quick look at the one on mine today and tbh I can't really see how its been modded, though I don't know what the standard unit looks like.

I only remembered to have a look later on so just tried to slide the batter out of the way and get some quick pics but you can't really see much with the battery tray still in place. Will try and get them off the camera in a minute.

GUNNER - whats the minor mod thats done to the 172 mount?
