Ok the CV joint came apart on my 16valver about a week ago, and been workin all over xmas so wil only get todo it tommorow. I've got my haynes manual ready and central auto suplies is just round the corner, so I'm goin to take the driveshaft in and see what they say about the condition of it tommorow, once its all apart, at the same time I will get the new cv joint (Ive rung and they have both types of driveshaft in stock just in case) basically I want to know whats the likely hood that the driveshaft will be damaged and how I can tell? (so I know they arn't playing with me) and also is there anything I need to know before undertaking this job, I have borrowed a bloody big breaker bar from work (halfords) , just really wnat as much info as poss. cheers guys

This job is a peice of piss.

Just take off the wheel as per normal, undo one of the suspension mount bolts (doesn't really matter which one). Undo the lower pinch bolt and lever apart the lower wishbone and hub. Be careful not to damage the CV boot.

Next job, get under the car and knock out the roll pin with a 5mm tap. Then just slide off the inner CV joint from the stub shaft coming out of the gearbox. Once out then you can slide the whole driveshaft backwards to free the outside CV joint from the hub.

Job done...change CV joint, renew grease and whack it back in.

Driveshaft needs to have taken a hammering for it to be knackered. Effectively it is a rod of steel with just splines at either end for the CV joints to attach to. It can be either bent, check by rolling it on a flat surface, or twisted but I doubt this one.

Good luck mate.

Before you take it off the car, push teh shaft up and check for play in the cv joint, if there is play then its knackered, so i was told by a gearbox specialist.

Is it for a williams or a shorter track car?

Reason i ask is that CV boots are a pain int eh arse to get on, and GSF do the o/s shaft for the shorter front track clios for £45 exchange, where as a cv boot kit is £30 from Reno, i decided it was easier to swap the whole driveshaft

its out, but I have now been told by centrals that I need to know if its the 107mm or 117mm (i think these were the two figures) this is for the whole unit with cv.

I didnt need to wack the pin out as the driveshaft was completly loose and just came out from the gearbox end piece of piss, but I don't know if damage could have been done to the gearbox or what else?

Also when i tried to get the ball joint to pieces the driveshaft came out of the hub instead so the ball joint is stil together - is this a problem? will I need to detach this to (i have seperated the ball joint at the end of the track rod end, its the other one that wudnt seperate).

if u are taking the driveshaft out all u need to do is take the driveshaft nut/washer off, undo the 2x 18mm strut bolts and slide it out of the hub assembly and off the box end, then just refit the hub to the strut with the 2x 18mm bolts again untill u get the driveshaft sorted
