I f##king hate these cars sometimes. It now looks like after having the engine and box out the bloody crank shaft oil seal has now decided to let go. Im FUMING.

Its leaking oil in a decent quantity on the underside of the gearbox, running onto the casing for the downpipe and the gearbox dog bone among other places.

What does it take to have these cars to run more than five minutes without braking. This coupled with everything else i have just about had it!

How come you had the engine out but yet didn't change tings like that when it was out?

Right folks, it looks like it is actually the gearbox oil seal that is leaking. I cleaned it all up and took it out for a spin around the block. Got it back in the garage and up in the air and if you look into the gearbox you can see the bell housing and it has loads of oil in the, and dripping out from that.

It doesnt look like the crankshaft oil seal has gone afterall.

Still a right pain in the ass. This is probably why i am getting some clutch judder too, even though its a brand new clutch.

The gearbox was meant to have been rebuilt, and as far as driving is concerned its spot on. Perhaps the person who rebuilt it forgot to replace the oil seal.

Whatever the case may be, i now have to get the box off asap and sort it.

What is the quickest and easiest way to do this. I dont particularly want to take the entire sub frame off. Haynes reckons you need to drop the sub fram ea little bit exposing the bolts but not completely.

HELP NEEDED!!

Whats actually leaking engine oil or gearbox oil, engine oil will be blkack, where as gearbox oil smells sweet like cat's piss and will look new still

Its kind of both! Im replacing both gearbox oil seal and crankshaft just to be on the safe side. It cant beanything else surely? Its not leaking form the block, nor the rocker cover gasket as these would be obvious.

From where the oil has dripped onto it could only come from half way up the gearbox on the under side.

Its a shame none of you guys live anywhere near me to concur the problem(s)

I had a similar leak on mine turned out to be a cracked gearbox casing, but thats only cus it had been off the track and smacked the kerb on teh way off

Is the oil sweet smelling, if so i woudl put my money ont eh join between the 2 halves of the vrankcase.

Although if the clutch is slipping it might be the crack shaft oil seal.
e
After reading your posts through again ahve a look at the input shaft oil seal

I know this will probably not help at all willy 2 but who did the work on the car and would you not just take it back to who did the box and clutch?Otherwise you may void the warranty on the work carried out if any.

Oil can seep from anywhere and appear to be coming from one direction when in fact its the other.

In answer to your qestion Fab, the gearbox was bought off of ebay. It has supposedly been rebuilt. I think it has as its dead smooth, no problems at all changing down the gears especially second from a high speed.

The clutch was bought from a renault specialist. Its OE kit. All the engine work and gearbox fitting/removal was carried out by me and the old man. Dad is an ex F1 mechanic from back in the 70's and has built his own thunder saloon from scratch in his time so he knows a thing or two about engines.

I understand what your saying about where the oil is actually coming from, and that is why it was cleaned down with petrol wiped with a cloth so it was clean as a whistle. Run round the block and up on the jack and you can see where it is leaking from. Oil only goes one way when it runs it cant go up. So where its leaking from were guessing that its the oil seal on the box. With the clutch juddering (not slipping) this only adds to the notion that its the gearbox oil seal.

Either way what ever happens we have to get the box off. '
