should i let my local garage (a great mechanic) install a standard clutch, or should i a better one for him to fit....?

im not to keen on over heavy clutches, but im prepared to listen to reason ! :?

been quoted it will take around 8-10 hours to replace clutch. apparantly because its a tight fit, you have to take the engine out?

how much time would you expect it to take ?

:( :x :x

About right I think.. depending how you do it.

I was quoted £550 and £600 from Renault specialists to do mine.

Thats way too much.
Got quoted from renault main dealer £400.
You'll get it done for half that price if you know who to call.

Loads of places won't do it as they know what a pain it is.
I found a proper clutch place would do it for £300 all in cash in hand.
In the end I got a Renault mechanic to do it for £250 all in plus he did it on the drive at my house. It took him 8 hrs though no need to get the engine out he just shoved the geaxbox over to make room.

i used the ktec uprated/r5gtt clutch when i rebuilt mine, mainly because of the raggin it gets at york etc.

altho the std one that was in lasted me 2 years, iv had this one in for 2 years also now, and have gone thru a couple of clutch pedals tho lol

its in with my local garage (local to work).

hes a top bloke, he gives it to me straight (fnarr fnarr) and he has done some small jobs for free in the past.

winston sounds like a good idea, but bury isnt local and im busy most weekends.

im loathed to get a renault engineer to come to my house and do it on my drive. i had some horrible experiences in the past with renault dealers/mechanics with my r5t, this is how i managed to find a local garage who in my opinion is the most competent mechanic ive met.

My local garage did it by taking subframe out. Less than 6 hours £150 labour charge including fitting new clutch cable which they reckoned was fiddliest bit.

Supplied clutch myself at less than £50 from GSF so £200 all in.

im sorry mate thats rubbish because i did mine on the drive and it took me 7 hours and i took the engine out its easy enough getting the box out but to put the box in with the enging its a right bitch and almost impossible as the wheel arch is in the way not worth the hasle just take the enging out save the hassle and you cant slide the box over cause the wheel arch is right in the way !
