View Full Version : Air filters
I was just looking at skylines...AGAIN!! and i spotted some seriously modded motors on www.findit.co.uk
I understand why people say not to use open induction kits because of ambient temperatures under the bonnet. But Skylines are running TWIN TURBOS and often HUGE SINGLE TURBO's.
Seems a bit of a double standard does that. Surely if it meant that they had an extra few bhp by running standard air boxes or even fully enclosed ones they would??
Am i missing something? Please feel free to re-educate me! :D [/url]
the air might be less dense, but when it comes to Turbos, the more air the better

i just came  what a beauty
Car porn! I'm off to ...erm take a shit
The air a turbo pulls in is going to be hot anyway since its compressed so intake temps are not going to benefit from running the std airbox...it'll also act as a restriction compared to the IK. As BRUN says the more air the better...
plus all that hot air gets stuffed through an intercooler/chargecooler before going in to the eng. skyline is very sexy indeed, wounder if he would swap for a clio :?:
A nice thought but I wouldn't take bets on that one! :)
Turbo engine bays can get bloddy hot. IMO from having an R5, its probably more important to get cold air. My R5 hated sucking up hot air.
Personally I think those open filters are just useless fashion items.
Personally id like to see a dyno chart showing what are the losses / gains of an open induction kit vs a closed i/k vs a panel filter element. I dont think there will be a huge amount of difference in it.
Are you really able to tell if you have an extra 2bhp? id doubt it. An empty tank of fuel will be more noticeable i think. IMHO.

Yup...i/k are for noise only imo don't expect any power in most cases I'd say they probably make the car slower!! My saxo had huge flat spots when I had a k&n on...
I hope i dont offend anyone and this might sound a bit anal (apologies to Martin) but has anyone got any proof of this?? I guess a lot of the time it might be down to gut feelings thats its a) faster or b) slower, but its not very scientific.
Im up for the club dyno gathering. im going to bring my pipercross and my standard airbox and get two runs (if im allowed!) and we (i) will then know for sure without any conjecture the gains / losses to be had with the said air filter element in place.
