ok another story for ya, was goin round town in the missus car (she was drivin), and this 172 came right up her arse so she turned into a side road and he followed so she did aload more manovers and he followed!!

anyways when we pulled up at the bank and wound his window down next to my windo and came out with

"WHEN DID U RACE MY CAR"
and i didnt have a clue what he was on about, and supposedly some of the lads that know my car round melton know that its pretty powerful and have told him to gimme a race but he took the wrong end of the stick ( we never got on in school, i beat him up a few times for slaggin mates off  )

so next time i see him and im out in my car im gonna give it a go, who do u rekon will come out top, his is standard!!!!!

get him out of the car n tell him if he goes near the missues again ul rip his head off or something.
as for a valver vs 172, i raced a 172 with filter and zaust in my hybrid and absolutely annihilated, didnt keep with me half as much as a standard valver does!

Dancliovalver

so i should stand a pretty good chance then!!!
i should have the 2.0ltr bottom end soon so should av him anyways!!!!!!

Wouldnt say there slow and wouldve thought even a very good valver would only be even at best!!!

My pal has just bought a mk2 and i managed to stay with him up to 1** without being right on the limiter in every gear.

Also depends weather its a mk1 or 2 172, theres loads of 2's round my way but i know someone who has a mk1 that will pull nicely on all of them.

If he does beat you though and is smarmy about it least you know you could beat him in another way!!!

the one i bet was the latest model of the 172 which is the quicker one over the ph1 172

Is your hybrid quicker that a standard-ish Williams? If not, i wouldn't bother, unless he can't drive his 172 properly.

I sold my Williams (which was standard apart from exhaust and ik, 157bhp when r/r) and bought a mk1 172 a couple of weeks ago. Although i regret doing it, the 172 IS quicker, no doubt about it! Maybe upto about 40-50 there's prob not much in it, Williams may have been marginly quicker off the line even, but one you get above 60, the 172 pulls away. I can give an honest comparison, i've now owned and driven both hard, and the 172 may be boring and dull, but its not slow!

There is a huge variation between mk2 172`s tbh....

Oh, forgot to add......... the 172 doesn't really do corners that well though, although that might be down to the crappy 17's that currently sit on it, so can't compare handling to well to a standard one.... my above post was really concerning straight line speeds

the one i bet was the latest model of the 172 which is the quicker one over the ph1 172

RS1's are widley known to be the quicker and like i say i have mates with both statndard v standard RS1 wins.

Rekon from standing the 172 will beat a satndardish 2.0 16v.

If this is any more help CTR's and 172s (i have mates with them and its tried and tested) are very similar straight line sprinters and i can stay with both from 2nd on the power upto about a ton no probs (never would do over that of corse ;)) but iv raced the CTR from standing and there was 2/3 cars in the CTR's favour!

Well on paper the ph1 172 isnt as quick as the ph2 172
The one i raced was a ph2 172 and mine was pretty much standard, cat back exhaust, panel filter, valver gearbox. all i know about that was he had an exhaust and filter and he couldnt believe how much i bet him.
His words where: "whats in that mate? i normally kill the 1.8s!" he was very surprised and has since had it chipped at bb tuning....cant seem to find him now tho lol

29-11-2005, 11:52
oh and that was in a straight line...acceleration i pulled away and then just maintained the gap since he didnt gain on me and i didnt lose any!

JayR

Could he drive the 172? Lol

You must have a rocket and his mustve been a proper dud if youve killed it becuse i cant believe that even say a 170 bhp 2.0 valver running full leather like yours is/was would be able to murder another hot hatch like you say!!!

in my experiences.....a 172 would beat a valver, unless its 2.0 powered.

iv raced many a 172, and many a 1.8 valver, in both the williams' and me old valver, valvers do ok til about 60-70, then drop off rapidly compared to both the 2.0 willys/hybrids and the 172s, altho the 172s do fall back as well, but not at such a great pace.

but as chris said, theres loadsa diff in actual power and speed in the 172s, but also in the valvers and willys, .

so if u have a quick valver, and he has a slow 172, u cud b in with a shot. if his 172 is average or quicker, then ul struggle.

if u have an average valver, or a slow 1.......best off forgettin it unless u a better driver than him lol

Exactly, at the end of the day, wether you're looking at 172's. Williams or valvers, you're looking at "similar" kinda cars, all of which should be running around 7 - 8 secs 0-60. If you're in one of these and absolutley killin the other car, my guess would be that either a) they're not trying, b) they can't drive or c) there car is seriously f**ked

I raced a 172 a while back. It pulled about 6 car lengths on me to about 120, which tbh aint that much really, but on a twisty road where your only using 2nd/3rd gear there will be nowt in it. He may pull a little on 3rd gear exits. In a stright line though after 2nd gear you will be trailing a little. :P

Dancliovalver
29-11-2005, 15:50
well i wasnt all that concerned bout top end to be honest, the cams are set for top end performance so should do pretty well past 80 i reckon, but i do know that the 172 is very quick and theres no denying i will have my hands full!!!!

ive raced the guy before when he had an escort RS turbo, thrashed him, but his RS was standard, he cant drive atall, heard him crunching a few gears trying to change fast!!!!!

Dancliovalver
29-11-2005, 15:55
oh and forgot to mention i think its the full fat MK2 but im not to sure, it doesnt say cup or anything on the back!!!

and another question, thinking of saving some cash, selling my car, buying a mint standard white valver with a strong engine and having one of k-tecs turbo conversions, how do u reckon i would fair against this guy then???

Andyvalver
29-11-2005, 17:34
Im pretty sure any turbo covertion on a valver wil see off all mk2's exept the TT clio

nick reads iv only ever really raced down the strip, him on 17s tho, and iv beat him more times than iv lost to him. had a bit of a do with craggy, adi, me and nick round doncaster on way to to show, he was only just keeping up with us. craggy vts, adi the 'rossa, me std.

I once let a red mk2 172 past me (me on my own, he had a passenger) at about 80mph, when he passed I gunned it and I hear his note change so I know he did too...

Now I don't bullshit, never have done or will do... I'll tell it as it is...we never moved either of us, though he bottled it at about 120, to be honest I was thankful as I was about to run out of puff! don't know what it is about this enigne but it dies on its arse as soon as you see 120...

to be honest this is the only ever encounter i've had with a mk2, I don't seem to get many chances with anything that would be considered a challenge :(

although that blast with that s2000 was cracking...

sounds good mate have u had any mods??
and also Daz do u have or did u have any mods when racing the 172??

ill definatly be at the MK1 VS MK2 bash, looking forward to ir, would love to see how we all do against em!!

Chris n`nic
30-11-2005, 17:44
lol Only filter chip and exhaust/decat but NO 2ltr NA would get 321lb/ft. The rr doubled the torque on the read out so it still got 160lb/ft and 157bhp atw so I`m more than happy with it tbh.....for now!
