Hi,
Just wondering if a 16v clio would be suitable as a first car.iv been driving a while but with my parents cars and want to get my own,im in no way a boy racer and have an interest in these cars i just like the idea of something different. are they to fast?i learnt in a 1.7 turbo and altho the power might not be so much it was easy to control. i study motorsport at college and there is one 16v and one williams both driven by young apprentices. im 18 but do have looked into insurance.
thankyou
Joe

i got one in may this year a month after i turned 18, my first car was a 1.8 golf, second a 318i bmw, and then the valver, i wouldn't consider the power too much too handle, respect it and know when to use it and you wont go far wrong :)

Valvers are all power and no torque IMO (although that's sooo easily rectified). So if you're not a boy (or bloke) racer you'll be fine. Plus they handle really well. I don't drive very hard though. Many of the people on here do track days so I'm sure they can tell you how they handle when being "driven".

my 1st car was a 1.2 clio after 3-4 months of owning that i had a valver, big jump, and insurance is a bitch but i love every second of it

they arent that bad really aslong as you look after it and dont boot it everywhere, you have to know when to go fast. I had a 1.2 clio for 14months and then i moved onto a willy engined valver...big hike in power and insurance lol. dont buy one unless you have plenty of cash though as they need a good looking after!

Do it its got a variable switch for the accelerator at the end of the day not an on/off switch.

I went from a 1.2 Clio to the Valver with no problems.

why not get a 1.4 sport? 80bhp cheap insurance, quite nippy and get a bit of experience in that with handling etc and then after a year move to a valver, plus you will get a years no claims and bring your insurance down!
Nothing better than experience. you shouldnt go straight in one from passing your test i dont think tho not if your gunna boot it! i sed i wouldnt boot my 1.2 but first thing i did was take it down the first bit of private road and hit 105mph....not a motorway either lol. Take car of it if you get one!

23-11-2005, 13:44
I did exactly the same I was gonna be a law abiding driver until the first time I jumped in the car after passing my test. Practiced going round corners fast in it aswell, as it was the only way I could keep up with slightly faster cars.

I think you should get the Valver. The good thing with them is you don't have to push so hard going round corners to start with, as they're fast enough on the straights to beat most things anyway.

I wrote my 1.4 rt off at 80mph when i was 18. Tbh i think i would be dead if i was in a valver cuz i would of been goin quicker.

Id say get one if you can afford the insurance and to fix it when it breaks (becuase they do) :) . At 18 you have to respect the power of the car though or you will die  .

Great cars with great looks and the best performance for its insurance group imo.

0-60 = around 7.5 secs
Top speed is 130

depends how mature you are and how mature you will be when you got your car full of your mates and you get someone egging you into a race....or if you get carried away or cocky n think you are colin mc rae or something..once you get like that then its your funeral..
Top speed it 134/5 at the limiter in 5th gear :D

Im 18, and have just got a valver, went from a 1.2rl which i had from last febuary untill now. It is a big jump of power, but im getting used to it alot better than i thought i would, being very carefull though!

Valvers are all power and no torque IMO (although that's sooo easily rectified).

Hows that then? :D

If you fully open the throttle you'll find theres 3mm of play in the secondary throttle. so it doesn't open fully. An M3 nut and bolt fits the gap in the secondary throttle quadrant perfectly.
I reckon it gives it proper midrange grunt and it pulls from 3k. Try it, I'd like to know what you think of it.

They have no low down power, plenty at the top end of the rev rangem but you don't wanna be driving over 4k revs all the time

Personally i think you should get a 1.4 or something as you wont apriciate how fast the 16v is in comparison to other cars. Plus 1.4's are good to learn in and crash :P

Willy 2
01-12-2005, 12:24
At the end of the day your not meant to crash!!

If you crash in any car it could be fatal. My second car was a Golf Gti Mk2 and i thought that was a rocket ship, but give it a few months and you soon learn its power.

Most people probably have a few prangs in their early driving career, i know i did, but i put it down to honing my skills!! :P

Im sure if you have your heart set on getting one, you'll buy one regardless of what people on here "advise" you to do.

Best of luck

:D

most people only want the 16v for the looks...dont even know aboot the speed

if u only want the looks get a RT and buy the 16v bits n bobs looks good and wont kill u with the speed

i bounced around in a shoddy 1.4 for three years nearly before i got my valver in august n loved every second of motoring in the little clios!

i loved that 1.4 and owning n driving it meant i got used to clios n then fully and i mean FULLY appreciated the valver when i bought it!!

oh n i was a poor student n cudnt afford insurance so 1.4 was only option!!!

I too am 18 at the end of this month and have bought myself a valver to cherish, bloody expsensive already though. New tyres, suspension bearings brakes e.t.c

£260 on replacing and painting the rotten side sills. New windscreen needed too.

Im wondering what insruance company you guys are using (18 + Valver).

Quotes are coming back at me in the £2200 region with TPO cover :P Hope its worth it, ill soon find out.

i'm 19, my own policy, no NCB, 3 points with my mum and my Ex gf (gf at the time) on my policy and i pay 1015 tpft with glass cover included on that.
i dont see the point in insuring it fully comp atm as if i bent it i wouldnt claim for it anyway, only if there was another party invlolved its not worth enough to bother

21 with 3 years NCB, all mods declared and its £500 with Adrian Flux :D

BTW i had my 16v at 18 and it wasn't that bad to insure, 1200 tpft.

I had a crappy 1.2 to learn in and that took a few bashings, glad i had the 1.2 and not the 16v tbh

its definately not a good idea getin a powerful car when your younger cos u will crash it
although only experiance will teach you so uve got to start somewhere
ive driven an owned a lot of fast cars now, cossies m3's clioturbo etc an rate myself as an ok driver
i bought a valver wen i was 19-20 an put a williams engine init i didnt kno how to drive properly an if u email me or msn me ill show u the pics an they shud put u off from bein a bigshot, adiburgess10@hotmail.com ask for clio crash pics
sayin that tho i did get better an now drive like a good en jus took a big scare an some practise to get me ok
