View Full Version : How much play in the diff?

Recently i seem to have a lot of play in the box. I accelerate and let off to engine brake and it jolts :? Pretty sure its not a mount.

I jacked up my car and put it in gear, then moved the wheel left to right to see what sort of play there was in the shaft/box. I can move my wheel left to right about 1 to 1.5 inch whilst its in gear. Is this too much cuz its seems it to me.
I always though it should be a few mm :?

p.s, Haynes manuals are ****in useless

cheers

first thing to do is **** the haynes manual in the bin!

"jolts" is a hard one to determine.does she race up the gears without problems?

when you were turning the wheels, was the play equal on both sides?
think on situations like this you gotta wait till whatever it is breaks.

The play is the same on both shafts (i jacked up both sides) It goes throught the gears fine but when i let of the throttle it jolts as the box takes the weight of the car when slowing. The jolt is there becuase of the amount of play in the diff i think. Im sure you should only have a little bit of play, like 2mm each way or somet :?

does it do the same in reverse?

Shit, thats the only gear i didnt check. Same in the other 5 though :D

Would it be different in 5th?

could also be electrical as when you are decelerating the ECU is delivering different signals.

when decelerating dont lift off completely and see if it jolts.
i'm not a hundred percent sure but if there is a fuel cut off switch it may be shortening out.

Glad im not alone :D The box has only done 10k and i think its on its way out cuz of the jolting. Dunno what makes it jolt but its ****in a annoying  Pisses me off how the original box managed to last 137k and the new reconditioned one is worrying me at 10k
