Ok im intending to buy that gearbox for the williams 2 from the forsale section. aparently it whines and is the diff.
How easy/hard will this problem be to solve?
The seller said that renault say a gearbox oil (forget which) can quiten the whining noise.
Is it possible to just fix the dif? or does the whole box have to be done?
Someone mentioned bearings aswell?
Oh and an LSD instead of the normal diff i believe, how much would one of these cost?
Thanks

The gearbox will need complete strip down...and to be honest if the diff is whining then you may have tiny bits of swarf floating around, so it is best to change all the bearings at the same time...peanuts compared with taking it out again a few months down the line!!

Not too sure about the LSD, IMO you don't need one as the power output isn't that huge and getting traction isn't a big problem. Unless you always drive in the wet.

There a few specialist gearbox/transmission companies that may offer the LSD (not sure which type though), like Quaife for example but you will need a big wallet.

These puppies will be expensive as they have been engineered for a car that didn't have them as standard.

Quife don't make an ATB for the JB3 or JC5 either :(

There is a place in italy that made plate diffs for them that use the standard shafts but other than that most companies require custom ones

Gripper do an LSD for the Williams, have a look in `Group Buys' it explains about it in there...

that LSD is a bit expensive....would i be able to replace the diff and bearings myself? i have emailed the company doing the group buy asking how much theyd do a rebuild for. How much am i looking at cost wise inc parts would you think?

I know mechanics that have been in the trade for years who wont touch gearbox rebuilds with a bargepole, your better off paying someone who specialises in them to rebuild it otherwise you'll only be taking it out again in the not so distant future
