I'm ringing up for insurance at the moment and the compnay who seem most keen to insure me realy want an engineers report and I don't think they'll accpt me or friends at work (who are engineers offically) siginign one so anyone any idea who would write one for me and how much I'd be looking at?

Anyone any experiance with kit cars sinc eht ecar got enough modifications surly I could insurer it as a kit car cheaply but how do I make it officially a kit car?

Also they queried if the Williams had 5 doors, was petrol, manual gearbox, engine size and what colour it was so I'm not puting much hope on they knwoing what it was least the woman knew what cams were.

Get it on a classic policy. They'll know what's going on. (assuming it's over 10yrs old)

They also questioned engine size, fuel and colour (why colour car have an effect on insurance is beyond me).
Insuring it in my mums name without me driving its just £270 fully comp. I hate being young and males when it comes to insurance.
Will give the classic car companies a ring tomorrow.

Only problem is, (and I know it's not nice to think about it ) if there's a fatality or something then your car will definately be investigated. And the last thing you want is to have no insurance when you have a death or very serious injury on your hands.

Depressing but true! :?

I might think about insuring it daily ever now and again and saying its standard but the cars far from it. Cams are the least of my worries firstly there the roll cage. Then there no interier and only bucket seats and harnesses. Also it lowered. Thats before you even get to the engine.

no seats or interior etc will work for u mate...part of the exclusivity of the williams is the trim..the only real reason they gunna get nicked is to get moved out of the way as in northys case, or stolen to strip n sell. hardly any williams bits makes it less desirable to thieves. imo of course.

for an engineers report they usually want a mechanical engineer i.e someone that works on cars all the time.

as for a kit car..well uv no chance there tbh. its still got the std suspension layout, std subby layout etc, hasnt been re-shelled , has no other marque of car bits fitted to make it etc. they work on a points system, or did, but be wary...too many points = car being regd as a q plate.ins will love that lmao

T'other Craig (with white t.b'd clio) was telling me about "greenlight" insurance the other day....they are really good for modified cars. i got a quotes of £930 FC with EVERYTHING declared (pistons, t.b's, head, cams, ECU etc etc, even sp30!) im 22 (almost 23) 1 NCD, licence for 5.5 years.

if you need an engineers report signing/written, im a bachelor of engineering (BEng)

I found that CIS will let me drive cars third partys as part of my normal cover on the dci howver he said its not for long term use and cars obviuosuly arn't insured once I get out so you couldn't use a car to drive somewhere as the police can charge me when i get out of the car. However I can insure my mum daily on the car with a seperate polcy for £10 which means the cars fully insured when I'm not in it so its all OK.

Greenlight wouldn't touch me the mods arn't the problem its just the fact I've got two cars a few insurers would talk about insuring the Williams as an only car but not adding it to my policy. They want a whole policy just for the Williams which is expensive they want to use all my NCB on it so that at best is say £600 which means insuring the dci s £750.

Thanks for the info though stan. I started my BEng last year so I know the work you must have done.

CIS are the only company who offer this driving of other car policy as I found out over a few days many companys offer 3rd party driving of other cars but only if your over 25. Also they will allow you to add other higher insurance group cars to the policy although prices can be high (VTR was meantioned as something they didn't like as its a boy racer car)

In the end though CIS were almost the cheapest insurer at £475 which isn't to bad. As for a 172 best quote £1200 so I think getting one is off the cards till next year at least. I'm an insurance nighmare it seems it would have been £100 more not to add my parents to the policy.

I don't know why it was so high though I'm 23 with 3 yrs NCB and 1 claim.

Arr well thanks for the help everyone I think I'll see how the cars go and swop next year.

well you can only use your NCB on one car anyway, no matter which insurance you go with

I know matt wills had his balck LHD valver insured wiht competition car insurance, as a hill claimb car, and he coudl litterally do anything to it he wanted as longas the engine size didn't exceed 2100cc

Yep but that would take all my NCB and still be expensive and I don't use the car much on the road as I'm a wuss. Some companies would insure two cars and sort of give me discount on the second car as I already have a policy with them for the Williams but they were specialist insurers so wanted to charge me a fortune (relitively) to insure the eci a 172 as my main car wouldn't have been much extra as they all admitted they don't deal with people with normal cars. A dci is a boring normal car.
