Yeah, that's the plan. But I'm going as the level-headed knowledgable mate, which is a bad idea on both accounts. :P

Still, it it all goes wrong in a couple of months, I can buy it off my mate as a cheap track car

boot window surround rot
rear window surround rot
front window major rot
bumper mounts rot
sills and kick plates rot
sunroofs leak (surprise surprise)
heater matrix leakes check it or its a dash out job
check for smoke
clean coolant
any leaks
clutch is an engine out job
battery tray will have rotted away, maybe took the body with it
check subframe
check steering for play and make sure the indicators cancel,if they dont it could of been pranged and the column has bust
door pins wear and the door hits the kick plates
check no leaks on the petty tank
brakes work good

or buy one that is new from the ground up with 71k on the clock and ****ing mint for 3k off my mate!

If it was me, I'd be getting a bigger loan and, by the sounds of it, buying your mates! But unfortunately my mate wants to spend a grand max, and then tidy it up himself over time. I've tried to explain to him that he'll end up spending more in the long run if he buys a shitter, but he won't have it!

Cheers for the advice Rich, I shall go armed with the info and try to stop him buying on first sight! I'll let you know if I persuade him to up his limit considerably! Would your mate take any less?

Rich
21-10-2005, 14:49
he's spent 10k restoring it mate! he went in with the same thoughts as your mate and he has paid the price heavily!

all i can say is if you get on msn when you can i will put you in touch with the owner so you can talk with him direct, in all honesty though with what he has spent i'd be v.surprised if he took less

also piccys available from him via msn ;)

Rich

I'll speak to him tomorrow and see what he says, but I doubt he'll be keen on changing his original plan. I'll PM you my hotmail addy over the weekend if he is interested though :)

Zollo if that's as good as it sounds, than it's worth every one of those 300,000 pennies!

Personally I think they're actually pretty well rust protected. Though they do have tendency to rust at corners like window frames, and where the door shuts. Hmm just like a Clio then! As a matter of fact just check all the places you would on a Clio!
Body panels are wafer thin so expect a few dings on a car for a grand.

Check the oil and coolant: look for mayo (no seriously!) on the oil cap, and slick or sludge in coolant bottle. Probably more likely to see oil in the water cuz the higher pressure oil leaks into the waterways. Either of these means h/gasket leak, or cracked head. If the engine runs like shite too then could mean cracked liners

With the car running, let it idle for long enough for the fan to come on. Temp gauge shouldn't go much above 2/3. Look out for smoke. White means one of the above problems, blue: knackered turbo, black: running rich.

When driving, the needle should go to the second or third-to-last bar on the gauge. If it goes above, the boost has been upped and if it's on a standard Garret T2 you can almost bet on a new turbo soon. If the boost gauge goes to the end of the gauge get out, its gonna blow!!

Oh and check every one of the ridiculous number of water pipes. Cuz if one of them goes you're in trouble!

Unless your mate doesn't mind spending ALOT of time and a fair amount of money, then I'd say look for one at least £1500
IMHO Your mate should go for one that needs either a bit of mechanical works OR one that needs a bit of bodywork, or else the time and money spent starts to get silly

Oh yeah, one more thing to add to the collective list: The front seats tend to go 'all rocky' and the bolster material falls apart - but you can get new ones.

Rich

so as i say go for my mates with everything done to it as he has cared for it like a baby trust me!

I totally agree with what both of you are saying. We're going to see one in an hour or so, and hopefully I can sway him. But he's bringing the cash with him, so it's doubtful

I'm gonna check for overheating, oil/water sludge, smoking, knackered transmission, and unmanagable rust in certain places (below the a-pillar, etc). It's got a bit on the tailgate apparently, but a second hand tailgate can (eventually) be sourced. Tatty interiors and bodywork isn't a problem for him, but if it's in a shit state, it will have been neglected the same on the mechanical stuff too.

Ah well, it's not my money :P

I do like them and have said to myself my next car will be turbo'd. Would only get used at weekends.

Can you send me the full spec please Rich. Am really looking for a H plate grey Escort RS turbo or J plate grey Fiesta RS turbo but might be swayed.

Peronally as much as i love the 5gtt i wouldnt buy one  The engines are ok if looked after but everything else just seems to fall apart jus like a clio. My mate had a 5gtt a couple of years back but sold it because something broke on it every week  (Not the engine).

Great cars though :P
