The guy is a restoration specialist, so fingers crossed he will be ok. Has a V8 Corvette in when i was there and was working on parts from an AC Cobra :D

Phoned the guy today, and im a bit more confident. He has cut out the rust (said i did a good job on it) and has replaced the metal. He then sealed it both front and back and will the zinc coat it.

Seems like hes doing a thorough job. :D

KingStromba
19-03-2005, 14:40
Just wasnt good enough. Hes having to do it all again.

Few marks in the paint. Hed sprayed over the black brake coolant duct plastic panels on the front bumper, arch wasnt perfect, and tailgate had a tape mark on it.

Hes booked out all next weekend so hes having to work all weekend.

19-03-2005, 15:09
sorry to hear this mate.

Did you get any pictures while u were there.

Also when u collect it - give it a wash before u pay for it - as everytime i wash mine i find more problems to fix.

KingStromba
19-03-2005, 15:22
It was in a state (very dirty), so yes i will take a cloth and go over it.

I made it clear to the guy this is a show car and needs to be A1.

I will not settle for A2, its perfect or its rejected again.

He even left primer on the front splitter. So i will deduct the cost of a new front splitter. He painted over the brake duct plastic block outs, soagain these will be deducted from the total for new ones.

Any idea how much these parts are?

He also broke the clips off the bumpstrip and tried to stick it down with tape. I said he will need to replace all the clips with genuine Renault ones. If not, again this will be deducted.

I will asses each panel before i pick it up on tuesday.

Sorry to hear about your troubles!

MatBrown
19-03-2005, 16:25
Sorry to hear that mate, and thats coming from someone who isn't anal about paintwork!!!
Still think it's easier to make a car mint doing the bodywork rather than the mechanicals?

Mat.

KingStromba
19-03-2005, 16:29
The paint match was actually very good.

It was the details that were bad. I small drip, a few marks in the paint, a slight amount of overspray. Lots of little things.

In terms of matching the paint i was pretty impressed.

He didnt do a really bad job. Just think he should have spent more time with the little bits.

Do you know if this is true, but he told me there are two variants of the 449 blue? A dark one and a light one.

MatBrown
19-03-2005, 16:33
Yeah, there's is always a number of variants.
It's the little bits that make all the difference.

northy
20-03-2005, 13:10
like i said when you rang me rob.

When you collect the car make sure you go over it there and then....once you take it away it will hard to come back on any problems you will find.

Ask for all the new and old paint to be buffed as well....saves you another job. and dont be scared to point out over spray, masking lines and runs.

KingStromba
20-03-2005, 14:42
And i told him to take the number plates off before he resprays the bumper

Did you employ the village idiot?

I would always go on personal recommendation for this type of thing normally, but i didnt have any, so i had to go to who i felt could best do the job. He was busy, which indicates his business has built up well, and he restores classics which indicates people trust him with their pride and joys.

Like i said the paint match was very good, but i dont think he realised how good i wanted this car.

And if it is shit i wont pay a penny.

Hard luck dude.

It's always a bit of a lottery finding a quality and reliable place/person for that kind of job. I was recommended a guy to touch up my bumper after somebody hit my car whilst it was parked.....
I could have done a better job with a two inch brush and some silver hammerite. :(

Well i have my doubts.

Swervin_Mervin
21-03-2005, 11:28
Shit innit, how I haven't heard of one top bodyshop yet.

I think I speak for most of the manchester lot in saying that we haven't yet found 1 that puts the care in to the details that should be.

I'm still pissed off that my ducting blanking plates were sprayed, as was the middle bar of the bumper.

MatBrown
21-03-2005, 12:11
The trouble lies in the fact that these places are businesses trying to earn a living and since most of the hard work is in the prep and little things it would be most benefitial if you could do these yourself or at least help them out.
I couldn't survive if i was to open my own bodyshop as i am too much of a perfectionist and the prices i would have to charge to cover my time would mean i wouldn't get any customers.

Mat.

summeh
21-03-2005, 12:42
yeah but there are people out there (like me) that will pay the premium associated with "perfectionists", I am one myself, hehe.

NickFr
21-03-2005, 12:49
KS, hope you get it sorted, however I would not want a shit job done, but given the stones and shit on the roads particularly over here, I would be shelling out every 6 months. I like to drive quickly, the stone chips are a nightmare and then you have the snow and salt. The answer appears to be Deep Pockets

KingStromba
21-03-2005, 14:01
He has ordered a new bump strip for me, which is a start. It will be rejected again until its right. If he wont correct the work i wont pay.

Take out fogs and remove front number plate and redo front bumper
Redo door

couldve rebuilt it mechanically ....evry nut n bolt by now mate hehe...

hope its all good wen u pick it up tho

KingStromba
25-03-2005, 09:43
So the problem Riplash had with his suspension after he knocked it on a curb i must have imagined then? The fact that it drove wrong and every garage said it was something different? He replaced pretty much everything down to the subframe, AND STILL IT WASNT RIGHT.

Yeah dead easy.

Engine yes, pretty simple to replace things (if not costly), suspension geometry is alot harder to get rid of small faults like pulls to one side and instabilities. Mechanicals doesnt just mean engine.

KingStromba
25-03-2005, 11:53
Right, just been down to look at the car and im much happier.

Had a good chat with the guy and im gonna bung him an extra 150, and in return he is going to get the work to A1 condition and also remove an extra dent i have found.

The tailgate has been redone and looks very nice. The arch is a much better shape, but he is still going to do it again to get it spot on.

But i dont get the car back until next weekend now.

KingStromba

Where the hell are you getting it sprayed?? It seems we have a few cowboy spray shops around Norwich. I was looking at getting some airbrushing done on my 19 by Specialists in Design at Gt Yarmouth until I really looked closely at some jobs they'd done at the weekend.

I've got a bloke at Rackheath, he resprayed my 19, and has done a few repairs on it since (including new doors and wings after a scrape), and he alwyas gets a good job done..... he just takes forever!

KingStromba
06-04-2005, 12:50
Thats the guy. Steve at procoat. He is doing a good job, but like you say its taking for ever.

KingStromba
06-04-2005, 12:51
Hey Shaun fancy a mini meet this weekend somewhere?

Allan
06-04-2005, 12:59
how muh for a full respray you think ? in 449

Rudders16v
06-04-2005, 13:05
Procoat?? Never heard of him mate!!

I use Max Bidwells, we had a few teething problems when he first did the respray, but now he knows i only accept perfect, he does the work himself rather than any of the others, and it's always spot-on.
Next to the Fiesta centre is another place, VSB i think they're called. They did the bootlid on my girlf's 206 (they're Peugeot's main body centre), and they did a top job to, also welded a new arch onto my 19 a few years back which was perfect.

So where's this Procoat?? Is that the one right round in the industrial estate, right on the corner past Seaglaze?? Or is it the one on the main road through Rackheath, next to the old peoples home behine the car sales site??

Bet thats where you were heading to on your pushbike the other day when you thought you saw me! hehe, they do have buses out that way you know!

Not sure about the weekend mate, probably of to Donny one day to look for some bargains on the trade stands, but i'll let you know nearer the time

KingStromba
06-04-2005, 13:34
Yeah its in Rackheath. Buses are for losers.

There are loads of body shops on Salhouse road. Fast fit there did my Williams exhaust for 103 quid. :D

Rudders16v
06-04-2005, 14:29
£103 for doing what to the exhaust? I've been thinking of changing back to standard, i used to work at Wilco's next door so always get a good discount, but assumed that they wouldn't do an exhaust for the Williams...... or did they just fit a non-standard exhaust which you supplied?

Thorpe Body Repair are on Salhouse road, they're good for smaller repairs, they're just near Clive Athowe's

How about a Rolling Road day at Clives??

KingStromba
06-04-2005, 14:43
103 quid for a whole williams exhaust. :D

VIPERONE
06-04-2005, 14:45

KingStromba
06-04-2005, 14:46
No thats the parts AND free labour.

Rudders16v
06-04-2005, 14:55
Oh, i might have to pop in at the weekend, suspension is going back to standard next week (well, with some 172 springs anyway so be better than it is now), so might go the whole "back to standard" and do the exhaust to, cheers KS

KingStromba
06-04-2005, 14:57
You want a 'Walker' copy. Essentially the same exhaust. Tail pipe is identical.

Should be 111 quid, but they ****ed up and only charged me 103. See if you can blag them.

Rudders16v
06-04-2005, 15:05
Out of interest, what does the standard tail pipe look like exactly?? Not sure i've ever notcied a Williams with a standard exhaust!

I'll be looking to get it for about £85, usually sort me out 20% discount so could be worth doing

KingStromba
06-04-2005, 15:11
Have a seach on the net. The standard pipe is small and curves downward. Id get a stainless if you want it to look sporty. I went standard purely for originality, although i am sure im losing some power and the sound in non existant.

BRUN
15-04-2005, 00:59
is this finished yet then

mine should be goin in next week i think
