ok, after my valver losing all gears on Friday, then overheating and blowing steam all over me on Saturday, today i get in it and i now have a knocking noise when driving, moreso when i turn right. Havent had a good chance to look yet, as it was dark when driving, but what are the likely causes?? I had a quick check and the plastic arch trims were inplace ok..

Cheers :)

Mine was doing the same. It was the lower ball joint.

Changed both sides to be sure.

I had a knocking that sounded exactly like a driveshaft. Turned out to be the downpipe hitting the rear engine mount.

could be the cv joint

call me stupid (cue lots of really funny replies starting 'stupid........') but what the heckers la is a cv joint?!

Constant Velocity joint, used in drive-shafts where the input and output shaft must rotate smoothly at the same uniform speed of rotation.

and u cant buy them on their own, on a clio you have to buy the whole driveshaft, but take ur old one back into the place u brought ur new one for and they will buy that off you

There will be vertical play int eh joint if it has gone.

TBH so many things that could be causing it

true, needs to be a little more specific, if its a wheel bearing the knockin will get quieter when turning corners, if its a CV joint it will get louder when turning a corner and you will feel the knocks in your steering wheel

Wheel bearings will get louder turning one way rather then the other.

Witht eh cv joint on mine i just had a vibratiion that came and went at about 80

my cv joint went on my 1.2 and it got louder as turning and had vibration thru my accelarator and brake from 30mph upwards

This si the problem, so many differnt things can indicate to something, someotimes it one, sometimes its the other, sometimes both

cheers for all the help guys, im still investigating what the problem might be..

From what i can see, i have a split CV boot, but there is no play in any of the joints in the area where the knocking is from (drivers side wheel). It is sometimes louder than the stereo, and other times is not there, and can be at both low and high speeds. There is no vibration through either the brakes or steering wheel though..

Im beginning to think its as KJ said, and could be the rear engine mount, as i know its worn..

get down b&q and get the sealant out :) if its the engine mount you will also have loads of vibrations in your gear stick and it will wobble alot, mine is almost still since i uprated the engine mount

New mount for a valver is about £15 from GSF iirc (dogbone), and if nothing is rusted a its a 5 min job to swap
