You need to take off the spark plug cover. You then need to undo the 10mm bolts holding the black plug wire separator on then use a torx bit to undo all the bolts around the edge of the rocker cover and the ones in the centre. It should then lift off though you might need to prise it slightly, but dont use a screwdriver.

and no you don't wanna be driving it when its off, unless you wanna spray the rest of your engine bay in oil.

can you see the cambelt with it off?

They are normal hexagonal bolts that hold the rocker cover on, not Torx ones. If you have Torx ones they are the wrong ones.

Replacement bolts are £0.45 each incl VAT, part no 77 03 001 123. It's worth getting replacements to finish off the rocker cover once painted, there are 8 in total around the edge of the cover which you can still see once the spark plug cover is on.

If the gasket is knackered, get a genuine one from Renault. I had one from GSF and it leaked within 3 weeks, replaced it with one from Renault and that has been fine for over a year now. A replacement is about £17.

No, Tiger, you can't see the cambelt with this off. You need to take off the cambelt cover on the left side of the engine. Support the engine with a jack and block of wood under the sump and remove the left hand engine mount, you can then take off the covers.

Sorry, I didn't realise that, but I must admit I didn't look.

Ive used the car for about 6 months now with no rocker cover gasket and it hasnt leaked a drop of oil. The bolts that are in it are fine I think even though they're not the right ones. Think theres about 16 in all arent there?

See ya

Hex or torx bolts

Later models tend to have torx

good idea to renew all parts when changing the rocker cover/cylinder head, id recomend you get a new gasket and bolts for it before putting it back on. Make sure they are tightened to the correct torque setting as bolts can warp and be damaged and could damage the rocker cover.

Im currently awaiting a new rocker cover from Matbrown which i will be polishing up, i also purchashed an inlet manifold to polish aswell, for both items and postage it cost me £50 from matbrown, give him a shout get a rocker cover off him then you can paint it and still drive your car!

No need for that. I wasn't talking shit, I didn't know 'cos I didn't look.

I do now and I have learnt something. We can't all be experts.

If you were joking, I'm sorry, it just didn't read like that to me.

check haynes manual, doesnt need to be specific torque but i think its about 5-10nm. just nip it tight an it'll do.

It doesn't ralley matter if the heads are Torx or Hex head screws, the head surface are is the same therefore all fixing torque setting should be the same. As long as you ensure the thread diameter/pitch are the same then who cares.

I would renew the gasket though to be safe and tighen the screws in an clockwise direction to help sread the gasket from middle to outside.

ill be sanding it with coarse paper first and working my way up to the finest paper, once ive sanded with the finest paper ill just be using some normal metal polish and giving it a really good buff! same will apply for the rocker. i paid £50 for rocker and manifold from matbrown.
