Play in the steering rack

I've been told by the MOT bloke that there was a little play in my steering rack. What is involved in putting this right, i.e. no play.

Usually the rubber bit towards the bottem of the stearing column, can get a new column, about £190 from reno i THINK, or £90, its a long time agoa when i last got a price for it, or about £45 second hand, other optiion, as described in the thread abocve it to weld it up, gives a better feel of the road than standard
